Hi guys,

I got a starter rebuild kit (see pic), and at first glance I recognize most of the parts, and I'm sure I'll recognize the rest once I pull it apart. My question is really regarding the bearings/races/bushings/bushes, whatever those are technically called. Has anyone rebuilt their starter using this sort of kit? Will I need a special tool to remove and reinstall the bearings?

Thanks for the help,

Jack

Hey jsmith24 I never had to rebuild mine yet, but I would be interested in where you got the repair kit from. I am assuming they will do the gl 1200's also.

Hey wingmaster,

I got mine from eBay, from someone who bought it and didn't need it. I paid about $25, but they go for about $80 new. I did a quick search and found that this eBay store sells the 1100 kits:

http://stores.ebay.com/JEBCO-STARTERS-and-ALTERNATORS

But I don't know if the 1100 and 1200 starters are the same. The outer parts sure look different.

I only got the kit because it was slightly more than the brushes I just bought (yep, I have an extra set now if anyone needs 'em), and the last time I cleaned my starter, I really messed up one of the gaskets. I also remember that my brush plate had a loose part, so it made sense.

Hope it helps,

Jack

Jack, great looking kit. I had mine down a few months ago I needed the brush plate. It had got hot and weaken the tension on the springs. I took it to a local company that rebuilds starters hoping they would put new brushes and plate in it. All they said they did was re-bushed the starter and turned the armature. It works good now. You should not have any problem taking the starter apart and putting the bushings & bearings in. Just clean it up real good and get the armature true and clean. Be careful with it and don’t get too rough with it taking out the bearings. They are simple to overhaul. There is a web page that walks you through the overhaul. www.icss.net/~squirts/techtips.htm

Thanks for the link, Loyd. I didn't see anything about bearings, but the other info was great anyway.

The disturbing part is that the bearings seem larger than those that I recall seeing the last time I had it open. Of course, that was a while back, and I really wasn't measuing things while I was in there.

Well, I plan on doing this tomorrow, so I think I'll be the first to do a full pictorial on it.

Jack

I vee seen those kits.Stocker starters sells those kits for about $50 USD .

I questioned if i really wanted to spendthe 50 find out the starter is beyond a rebuild kit then pay for another starter.

I think ill just pay the $135Usd return the core for $20 and be done with it.FREE SHIPPING to the USA.

But, if it is repairable, you will know that it is done right. Heard to many stories of bad rebuilds, including one experience myself. This was for a Nissan pick up though. Starter lasted 3 month before it locked up. Nose bearing was worn and should have been replaced when it was rebuilt. At least auto parts made it right and replaced it. If the installation is a bear, I still would of hated to do the same job twice.
