First off, I want to say hi as I am new to this forum. I really enjoy this site and the people are very friendly and knowledgable. I did a search but didn't find anything relevant to my question. I am getting ready to buy new tires for my 1500 SE. I Was thinking of going to Metzlers but have heard it takes a little bit to break them in and then they don't last all that long. I also read that Bridgestone has a pretty good tire that handles real well and lasts. Does anyone have any experience with various tires and can make recommendations? I am not looking for a super performance tire necessarily but I do want something that performs fairly well off the shelf.
Michelin Pilot-GTs have very good reviews. I've just mounted them up and I'm looking forward to trying them out but we still got snow/ice on the roads! Can't comment on the performance yet - but REAL soon I hope .
Those look nice! By all means, let us know how they perform. I figured a lot of members here are gearing up for the spring with new tires. I keep forgetting I am getting ready to head for the garage for the SUMMER here in Phoenix.
I rode 24,000 miles on E IIs, but wasn't very happy with the way they behave. I switched over to Metzeler 880s and prefer their behavior, especially on irregular pavement, scarified pavement and bridge grates. They've been lasting about 20,000 miles, but it's been worth it for the better feel.
E IIIs look a lot like the Metzelers (I think) and they may behave similarly, I don't know. I plan to stick with the 880s, though those Michelins sure look interesting . . .
I have the Pilot GT's and like them well. They grip as well as anything out there and shed water like you wouldn't believe. They also ignore tar snakes and gratings. Some have said they sing a little and I have heard a passing whisper now and then but not like the E3's are supposed to.
The E3's and Metzelers are known for cupping problems if the pressure is not kept at max. Other than that, some of the Metzelers have been known to have some rubber lamination bubbles from seperation of the laminations but that may be fixed now. Both of these are good grippers.
The E2's are the worst of the lot for handling but are known to get good mileage.
Redwing likes the Bridgestones pretty well and I have not heard a lot of negatives about them so maybe he's right for a change.
Avoid the Maxxons and any Chinese tires.
Take your pick. I'll repurchase the Michelins unless the mileage blows or some other problem pops up. So far about 4000 miles on them and I can just detect visually some differences from new. They act like radials like the Metzelers and Avons do. As well to some degree as the E3's.
I'd probably pick the Avons or Bridgestones next time if the Mitchies had issues for some reason.

Hey Rudy - I'm very pleased to hear that you are impressed with the Michies . I did a lot of research before I purchased them late last fall and I'm hoping they live up to the reviews.
In the end, I was down to the Michies or Avon Venoms - the Michies ended up on the bike.
I'll stick with Metzlers 880's. If you believe all the bad things you hear about anykind ofbrand, you might as well park the bike and walk. There are defects in any brand of tire from time to time.880's wear very well and longer than my dunlops did. Good luck.
E III's here. Been on for about 8000 kms and zero sign of any wear yet.And like Bob, I am cautious around wet and sand and the like. Otherwise, they handle great with near max pressure in both tires.
Exavid may be close to the high mileage guy with E-III's.
I just recently purchased a set of the new Michelin Pilot GTs for my 1500 to have on hand for that rainy day.
A terrific looking set of tires. Anxious to try them out, but the tires I have are good for another 10,000 miles and I don't want to waste them. That rubber is too expensive to throw out with the dishwater.
Don't know if they were brand new when I got the bike, but they looked good.
I keep 41 psi front/rear in them and they are not wearing much at all. I think they are Dunlop 790's. They are okay, nothing special but are giving good wear so far.
mine had the dunlop 790's on when it came from canada, lasted 3mths here and i had to get rid of them, too rough so i put on the pilots and have never looked back....
I had all kinds of tires and like the "Avon Venom R's" the best , great handling and etreemly good milage if you run them on the high side of air pressure!
welcome blueroy81, i have a 1200 and put metzlers on it. the breakin time is realy not bad. they rode fine. i had old dulops on it prior to that and they sucked. keeping in mind that they were pretty worn out and the po had the rear tire plugged.what an idiot. i think you need to be cautious when riding on any new tires on a bike or car. its nothing to put a hundred or two miles on a bike in no time, good luck, Don

I really love the way the Avon Venom "X"s have performed for me on my 1100I. 15K and still going strong. They do like to be pumped up a bit more than often suggested but I'd recommend them to anyone.
More questions with all these tire choices - Bias or radial - Better traction? Quieter? Better MPG? Longer wear?
