When checking and re-gapping the valve clearances for the first time on this recent acquisition of an 82 1100i, noticed a thin dark brownish film/sludge in the lower sections of both left and right valve areas. The upper/intake areas were nice and clean, but the bottoms--not.

What would this accumulation suggest? It rubs off with a rag, minimal effort.

Thanks!

Could be the engine has been running hot for some time.
If it spent it's recent life in Southern AZ where 100 plus temps are the norm that might explain it.
Other than that, oil changes not done frequent enough.

Since you have a film there it would be wise to check and clean the oil pickup screen.

You might try spraying some solvent on the valves run it a few miles and then change the oil.

Yeah, as far as I know, it's been an AZ bike all it's life. I used to live in Reseda, in some apartments right by the 101, while getting an edumacation in LA.

RB is a local to me here in AZ, but we haven't gotten together yet, soon, methinks, just busy with a new job, and moving.

Thanx...
