Hi to all.

Has anyone ever replaced a FRONT bearing on a standard Hitachi alternator ?

This alt. is a 40 amp. OEM unit for a GL1500 .

I have found the part # for the frontbearing on this site but my Honda service manual says to replace the entirefront cover, bearing and rotor as an assembly ! Big bucks there !

Bike is a recentnew purchase andhas 130000 miles on it so i decided to rebuild the alt. and starter with new brushes , bearings etc.

I assume the front bearing is a pressed in piece and am looking foranyone who has dealt with this before .

If you do the front bearing, you will need the seal, also.

Front seal is a CR8845 Front brg. is a 6022DU, rear is a 6000DU.

Here's how I test front bearing. With alternator apart, hold front bell so rotor is horizontal. (using rotor's weight for test) Spin rotor and see if there's any "bearing talk". If not rotate bell 1/4 turn, spin rotor again, repeat for the remaining 2 attempts. If you feel or hear anything at all, it's time for a new bearing. But, even if the bearing is good, the seal is on it's way out. Time for a new one, especially in hot country, bike is a hi miler, or earlier 1500's. So, if you have it apart for seal, you may as well change bearing. It's not that much.
