Hey Guys,

First time post-er here and was looking on the forum for my problem but couldn't find it. Closest was this one.

I have been having trouble with the engine turning over. Just sounds like the battery is dead. The engine might turn over a couple times super slowly and then the relay starts to click on and off.

I have tried a new battery, boosting from a car battery, re-did all the starter wiring, cleaned posts. When that didn't work I though "must be the starter". Put a brand new one on today and it has the exact same problem. I tried boosting right to the started post and there is still an issue. At times it will fire just enough to start and when it is running it runs awesome. It had a total engine rebuild a year and a half ago.

The only other thing is that when it is being boosted the posts will smoke and the booster cables get pretty hot.

I am completely stumped

I like to break everything down into components.

1. motor - does it turn ever easily by hand?
2. battery - you said it was new?
3. start solenoid - maybe bad inside, you can rebuild or replace
4. starter - new also?
5. wires/cables to and from the start solenoid to both battery and starter.

That's all the pieces to the starting circuit. So it looks like maybe the start solenoid is the best bet?

Another thought, what weight oil?

Welcome to the forum, Kieran.

Hot cables and smoking posts. Doesn't that mean too much resistance? It seems unlikely that a new starter wouldhavethe same defect as an old one, but not impossible.

I didn't see a replacement solenoid mentioned, but, if you jumped from the battery to the starter and got the same results...

My best guess would bea problem withthe starter's ground.

Thanks for the quick reply guys.

The solenoid? is this the same as the ignition relay?

there is no issue with the battery as I have tried boosting with many different batteries.

I will pull the plugs and try to to turn the engine by hand and see what happens.

the starter was bought new and since it is doing the same thing with the new one I either have two bad starters or two good ones meaning the problem is something else.

I thought the same thing myself withe ground but re wired that as well and it is all good.

As for the oil, also not sure on the weight. Will ask my pops and see but I am 99 percent sure that it is normal.

To clarify, did you clean/re-do the bike ground behind the triangle?

Okay, morriscatt - yup that is the ground I cleaned. Checked it with and ohm meter as well and it all looked good.

I understand this was probably not the most orthodox way of check to see if the engine moves freely but I pulled the plugs and turned the engine over in neutral to see if the compression was the main resistance for the starter. The starter spun really well. Then I thought, why not through it in gear to see what happens when I turn it over with I bit more resistance to the starter motor. Again the starter motor preformed well and spun fast turning the rear wheel while on the center stand.

What does everyone think?

I am in the same boat...but i just finished retiming the bike.

I found my right cam was off...tommorrow i will see if she cranks

ya mieze, I can't see that being my problem as it runs fine, starts fine, and even took it for a spin today by pushing it down a hill to start it. Just using the starter the issue.

Disconnect starter cable at solnoid and jump straight to starter. will eliminate every thing but the starter. Post on starter may be shorted if it has ever turned even on new assembly. Keno
