My bike has a low end miss and I'm thinking it's maybe a plug and a friend thinks it maybe a wire. so I was thinking of just changing them all but the price for OEM wire is out of this world (about $30.00 each at Bike Bandit). Does anyone know were to get after market wires or if they are even available.
I'm not saying never but very rarely are the plug wires at fault. I would suspect sparkplugs before the wires. The wiresare protected pretty well and normallylast forever unless atacked by small critters like mice, etc.... And it is rather difficult to replace them all. Before going that rather expensive route, I would investigate other options first. Can you elaborate a little more on what the bike is doing? Sometimes just running a carb cleaner will cure a lot of problems. I'm a huge fan of Chevron Techron but a lot of folks use Seafoam....
I ran a 1/2 can of SeaFoam thou it with no results. It happensmost of the time in first and second gearwhen you get on it (like a misfire). Sometimes in 5th gear when you let your speed go down and have to throttle up so you don't have to down shift. My friend ( who is a mechanic ) says he can hear it missing and thinks it's a plug or wire..
Ditto pw ., at 12 years old the wires should be in good shape but to check for sure you can remove the tupperware to access the wires ., at night or in a dark room lightly spray the wires and plugs with water while the motor is running and look for arcing .
Also check the plug drain holes for blockages .
When is the last time the carbs have been sync'ed? Also does it hold a steady idle or does it hunt a little? And since we are on the subject of fuel system, when is the last time the fuel filter or air filter have been replaced?
It idles OK. When I'm in there I'm going to replace the plugs, air filer ,fuel filter and any other filters in there. Going to try to do it this weekend if the weather will cooperate with me (have to work out side). This all just started to happen last weekend. I'm hoping it's just a bad plug. My friend (the mechanic) says I'm a maintenance nut when it comes to my bike. I just don't want to break down 100 miles or morefrom home. We travel a lot and are planning a trip up to New England this fall.
Hey Hickey I know what you mean about being a maintenance nut...I also hate to break down while out on a ride. Me and the wife were out in Green Mountian Falls Co....a few weeks ago and ours broke down...thought it was a fuel problem and replaced fuel pump, fuel filter and fuel petcock....turns out is was a spark problem and now I am in process of replacing ECU, Coils and plug wires, plugs, and Pulse Generators. I got the ECU and coils/plug wires off of Ebay...got some that are in great shape....and I got the pulse generators from CycleMaxohio brand new. Should run alot better when I am done.
Don't know if I'll go that far but what I'm planning on doing (I hope) will work. My friends wife says that she wishes that he would do a little more maintenance on his. He's been down 2 times last year. I guess he's a typical mechanic. If it ain't broke don't fixes it.
Well, Just got done to toke a 5 mile ride the the missing is not there now. I'm still thinking it was a bad plug. I put in NGK Iridium plugs. Will try to change the air filter, gas filter and the 2 small filter another day. The heat and humidity is bad up here right now (to much for this 60ish body).
As well protected as the wires are, unless you change plugs real often and damage one .... they'll last a lot longer than many will in cars as they don't move much. Not much way for even squirrels to get at them, and not likely to see chemicals splashed / leaked on them. Just change plugs as recommended, NGKs are good, and make sure drain holes below wells are clear and not stopped with mud.
try jumping the kill switch....when mine finally died completely i jumped it and did notice that the bike ran better than it ever did before...just a thought...and an easy test...p.s...also i could not fix the switch.
While your in there changing the air filter clean the carb slides with a small shot of carb cleaner spray, then a little WD40 and work them back n forth.
Also make sure to empty the 2 drain tubes on the left side just below the side cover.
