My insurance company (State Farm) will only pay $2300 for my 1984 Aspencade. I can not find a replacement.
With gas prices, I need it because I ride 800 miles a week between college and work.
I waited so long, 6 weeks for State Farm to make up there mind.
Now my brakes are in to my rotors, all 3 of them.
My windshield is broken near the base held on by plastic epoxy and strips of metal and sheet metal screws.
My left mirror can not be attched because fo the damage.
I do not have the money to fix right now.
$2300 might still buy you another running GL1200 Dan. Or you can take your time and source the parts to repair your own, and still have money left over. From your post, all you need is a fairing, brakes and a mirror.
Sorry for whatever mishap you had, but $2300 and keep the bike sounds very generous for that bike...I couldn't fault the insurance company for that... You should be able to replace it and part out the damaged bike or buy aparts bike and fix your own... And in either case be money ahead..
Didn't you have a post on this subject already?
I think you said you are working and going to school too?
The brakes could be from sticking caliper bolts that should be cleaned and greased when new pads are put on or it could be clogged return ports in the master cylinders. A good cleaning is in order per the manual or instructions in the GW Workshop section.
Get another one - easy to find in that price range with fewer miles and not all busted-up. Or like others said, keep the money and ride your other bike.
I have to agree 2300.00 is more then a fair deal for a bike that is 28 yrs old. I would replace the bike and part out the old one to cover some of the costs of the new bike.

> Dan,
As a former starving student myself, who also had a bike "Totaled" by the insurance company, I say Fix It yourself... even if it's fugly when done, just make it functional until the day that you get out of school, and have the change in your pocket to make it nice. Now's not the time, financially speaking, to worry about cosmetics.
Also, along the lines of "Making Lemonade when Life Gives You Lemons":
$2,300
- 100 Set of 3 brake pads
- 50 New mirror or equivalent (Maybe put a bicyclist helmet mirror on your helmet?)
- 20 JB Weld (to fix any cracks)
______
= $2,130 Remaining in your pocket!
Let's see... that's enough to buy you 532 gallons of gas (@$4 gal), taking you 21,280 miles (@40 mpg), over the course of 27 weeks of riding (800 mi/wk) or 7 months.
So basically, you get Free Gas for 7 months, in exchange for riding an ugly bike... That's gotta be worth something!
On top of that, I'm SURE somebody on here has the part/s you need... Free in exchange for shipping... Why not make a list of what's needed, and ask around?
2300 good deal could have been 1300 you know insurance co .you have a good parts bike sell parts off it use the 2300 and parts cashand buy a 1500 thats what I would do. its a win win I think
Don't know what to say without knowing what all is wrong with it. Is it ridable? Does it run? The left side of my fairing was busted too, and I fixed it by cutting a steel plate to fir inside, removed the left speaker to get inside, drilled holes in the plate, then attached the mirror with bolts and nuts. I was able to get a wrench inside the fairing to hold the nuts while I tightened the bolts. Nice and solid, you can't tell it was ever broken.
Another option you have is to simply install mirrors on the handlebars. the threaded holes are already there for them. I used a left mirror like that for months.
I got a brand new Slipstreamer windshield from JC Whitney for $65.
In AZ, you wouldn't have gotten half that much for that bike. Insurance companies here have some weird way of figuring value, I don't know what it is based on.
Dan, I was in the same verdict a few years back with my 1100. I was able to buy the bike back knowing it would always have a salvage title. I couldn't get full cover but if I took it to a cycle dealership and said all was fixed, then I could get full coverage from their written valuation. I chose not too because I was keeping the bike myself and and really didn't care what the title said,........! I was still money ahead to buy what Ineeded to fix it and had some spare change to even add some stuff I always wanted. If you have the time, know how, and really want to keep the bike, then who cares what the title says!!! Your still the one who makes the finally decision. My 2-cents for what it's worth!!:weightlifter:Bob
If the insurance company is going to give your current bike a salvage title, but you can`t license a salvage bike easily in Florida hard to say what the best options are. See what they will give you if you keep the bike, and find another like the one you have now. Maybe you can use the parts yourself, and sell whats left over.

I bought a 1982 Interstate with only 14,000 miles on ther clock, it still had the factory raiseed white letter tires on it, last tags and inspection was Sept of 1985....I gave the whole total sum of $1700.00 for it...Then got ill. so its had the carbs rebuilt, I'm finally after an family emergency getting the tires and pistons for my calipers....But then too, I do have a Jeep that I have to drive, so I haven't been in a big rush either....Deals are out there all you need to do is go look for them....
Keep the bike, go naked and fix the brakes. Otherwise you can find a another fairing for $ 100 or so.
