My '93 1500SE is getting terrible mileage - about 30mpg. This contrasts with 3 years ago when it was 40-42mpg. I have been running regular gas for 4 years, based on the recommendations of some owners. I now am beginning to run ethanol-free premium. Any suggestions on what I can/should do to improve my mileage? Thanks

Your engine is only 9:1 compression so it isn't going to run better on anything higher than 87 which is most likely the recommended octane by Honda. So 89 octane and higher is a waste of money. Several factors effect fuel economy Riding habits, tire inflation, riding environment, engine tuning, air cleaner, plugs, etc. one thing for sure mileage from 40-42 to 30 definitely isn't a fuel issue. It's a bike issue or a rider issue or both. 10% ethanol fuel has blamed for as much as a 10% reduction in fuel economy . I have not seen that reduction though. Still at 10% you should still be in the high 30's running 87 10% ethanol in the bike.

regular serviceing is importent plugs filters ect also you may be in need of a carb sync at this stage, adding some fuel system cleaner will also help like seafoam as the jet diamaters can be reduced over time with varnish build up ,dragging brakes is another one ,

Check your brakes to make sure something is not dragging. As they get older and build up corrosion inside the calipers they do not always release properly and a dragging brake will suck gas quickly.
