97 1500SE Have grinding noise from engine/transmission even when idleing at 2000 RPM and gets worse when in gear (does not matter which gear) Tech was no help.

Thought of R/R engine/trans with possibly wrecked bike but do not knowwhich year are interchangeable?

As just doing a engine swap myself I would stick with a 97-00 as the 4th gear problem was fixed. And should be a bolt to bolt.

No metal noticed, sound is more like growle (possibly something loose inside) this noise was present when I bought it used. Thought it was normal with wings, had no previous experience with it The noise is (louder now)audible mechanic was able to hear it but unable decipher without taking apart. also did not notice any power lose as I am driving but economy has dropped about 5miles/gal. Just had both tires changed spine was lubed, final gear lube R/R . drive shaft no defect.

A friend of mine has had to change his 1991SE UK spec engine due to transmission problem on 4th gear 70000 miles. He purcgased a 1999 engine with low miles (£1100) but as it was a short engine requiring carbs, alternator, starter changing over and he has encountered some problems that you and anyone else should be aware of.
1st there are extra hoses normally fitted on the new unit that did not come with the engine that are not on the older unit. further investigation shows this as a pairs system that are fitted to some bikes for emmission purposes. To overcome this He has had machined plugs to fit the openings on the engine, we hope this will overcome this. 2nd he started to bolt on the starter motor and broke the front case as the bolt from the 1991 was slightly longer than the new unit. He has now had to remove front engine case off and change for the older one. He is awaiting a new gasket at this point and will commence with fitting next week. If we come into any other problems I will post for you.

Hope this helps,

Derek
