I just got this 86 aspencade where the PO added these foot long extensions with chrome tips on the end. It is pretty loud - doesn't sound like straight pipes, but definitely louder than my 80 1100 with stock exhaust. I would like to make it quieter, that is what baffles are for, right? I've never had to buy or install any, what do I look for?
I just measure the pipe, buy the baffle, and drill a hole at the right spot to mount?
Not sure why they added the extensions unless the original mufflers had been modified and then were too loud, so they added the extensions to get the sound behind them. I doubt the extensions would help much with the turn down.
If it were mine, I believe I would cut the extensions off and see how bad it is. This would also allow you to see what you're working with and come up with a plan for fixing.
As far as baffles, I had a 750 Vulcan with aftermarket pipe which previous owner had removed the baffle. Way too loud for me. I fabbed a baffle using a steel pipe for the center, mounted a large washer on each end, sized them for the inside pipe diameter on the grinder wheel. Drilled holes in the sides of the pipe then wrapped it tight with fiberglass insulation. Wrapped that with duct tape to keep the fiberglass tight while I slid it into the pipe. Pushed it in tight and drilled a hole in the behind the back washer and added a machine screw to keep it from blowing out. This was meant as a test and depending on how it worked I planned to redo it with muffler packing. It did work very well for a few days of riding but got louder as the fiberglass burned away. Ended up selling it before I had a chance to repack it with the muffler packing.
Your local motorcycle shop should have muffler packing.
