I can't get any spark in the front two cylinders of my gl1100i. I changed the coil, still no spark. I swapped the yellow and blue wires and got a spark, but can't get one from the coil on that side. Have tried 3 different coils. Any suggestions?
try switching the ingnitor units to see if the spark follows. If that doesn't change anything it may have a bad pulse generator but first check the 4 pin connector in front of the battery.
I checked tha 4 pin connector for the pulse generator , it's ok. I performed the ohm test from the Clymer manual on the pulse generator wires, both sides registered 515 ohms. I've tried different igniter boxes, still no spark on #1 and #2 cylinders.
Ohm tests are pretty iffy, set your meter to AC volts and with the probes on the matching PG wires crank the engine and look for a voltage signal, it won't be much but they both should show some voltage.
if you have access to an Oscilloscope, you can look at the waveforms of the pulse generators.... watch them before, and after you heat them up with a hair dryer.... they should show the exact same waveform, and the exact same Voltage spikes from top of the wave to the bottom of the waveform.
thanks for the advice on my spark situation. it was the pulse generator. I found out the hard way that is possible to replace it without pulling the motor, but it wasn't easy. if there was one millimeter less room it couldn't be done that way. now I'm working on an 81 interstate that needs new vacuum slide pistons in the carbs. I have found some online, but they say they are from Canada. will the parts for Canadian version carbs fit mine? are there differences in the bikes sold in Canada and the US?
thanks
I don't think there is any difference but not 100% certain. What's wrong with your slides? Even if they are scored you can polish them, all they have to do is move up & down freely.
Use crumpled aluminum foil and if that doesn't quite do it try 0000 steel wool. Do the inside of the carb body too especially at the lower edge of the opening where the sharp corner is.
