I just did a Poorboy Conversion as well as timing belts on my 86 Aspencade. After starting the engine, there is a hammering noise in the right head, I think. I double checked the timing marks and they are correct. There was no noise before. Still makes the noise with the timing covers off and alternator belt off. Any ideas what could have happened? I should mention that I hadn't put the radiator on yet. I only ran it a very short time to check that it was charging or if there were any other issues. Well, it turns out that there is.
I took the timing covers off, put the pulley back on and ran it again. There's nothing for the pulley to hit. It sounds very much like hammering in the top end on the right side but there doesn't seem to be a miss so I don't think a valve hit a piston. I very thoroughly checked pulley positions in relationship to tdc and they were correct. The right side timing mark is maybe 2 mm away from the mark on the engine. I can't imagine that's enough to cause a problem. I was just hoping someone intimately familiar with these motors might tell me something I'm missing or not aware of. I'm going to spend more time with it this weekend and hopefully determine if the noise is top end or not. I was hoping to be riding it Saturday instead. Lol. Thanks for any advice.
might check the carburetor sync real quick. just pulling straws here.
