Question for the experts (CDI ignition)

I was wondering if anyone here can clear this to me.

I was debating on Facebook with a self called Badass Mechanic that claims that he "fixed" somebody's bike (a 93is concurs) that had a faulty wiring harness due to a fire and that damages the CDI unit. he claimed that he fixed it making it work without the CDI unit and saved his customer 50 bucks (used CDI unit price) and only spent 5 bucks on his repair. I say that it's just impossible, I told him that he may have saved some bucks using a cheap Chinese genetic CDI but he claims to have eliminated the need for a CDI unit.

Am I wrong and he is really a god?

I say you are both wrong, it doesn't have CDI ignition. But if it did or whatever type ignition it has there must be something there to make it work.

Here is a link that may be useful.
http://www.goldwingfacts.com/GoldwingTips.htm

In the link find the following paragraph and click the link (I couldn't reach for some reason, maybe you can.)

"GL1500 / ValkyrieAdjustable Timing. Everyone must have heard of the famous wheel for adjusting the ignition timing on the six cylinder engine. Click here to visit the homepage of a Ross Spoonland, who found a cheaper alternative."
