GL1500 reverse

I have a 1999 gl1500 SE when you put the bike in reverse and hit the starter button it will back up for about 5 seconds the it shuts down and you have to disengage the revers lever then engage it again or just keep pushing in the starter button. I have cleaned all the contacts at the switches and the one right under the trunk there is a big red juction block behind the right saddle bag and i pulled that apart and spayed electrical cleaner in there also. any help is well appreciated .Also thisis notmy bike a friend just bought it and it only has 23000 miles on it I amjust trying to help fix it. thanks Ken

Sorry if this is a silly question, but you do know you have continue to hold the starter button down, right?

There are a lot of requirements that must be met for the bike to go in reverse properly. What you are experiencing is the bike starts to back up and the reverse module sees something it does not like. Then it kicks out. The starter relay regulator is a popular one as Dbohrer has mentioned. Has he experienced any other issue you might think are unrelated?

Worked on the "big rigs" for 45 years now just riding my Wing whenever I can. Gets cold in Wisconsin.

Although you mentioned that you move the reverse lever forward and then up again, I want to make sure this point, which may be important.

1.When the bike stops reversing, can it reverse by just pushing the button again without moving the lever forward and up?

2.Will the R light go off when the bike stops reversing?

3.Will the headlight stay on when the lever is up and you push the start button?

I had the same issue with my '91. With some coaching I was able to locate two 5amp fuses kinda bundled together in a little snap-box under the seat near the battery (PO butchered all the electrics in this area on my bike so not sure exactly where yours will be). One of these fuses was blown. I replaced them both. The reverse has worked perfectly ever since.
