GL1500 more maintenance during tire change?

I'm not sure if this will help anyone or not. I always take my speedo cable out and give it a little grease when I do my front tire. I used to push some grease in the gear drive for the speedo also. This time I discovered something. On my 2000 all you have to do is grab the tang and you can work the gear right out of there. Now I can clean it up and put fresh grease in there. I would say modest on the grease of course. Wonder how many other models are the same?

The gear was sold separately on earlier models, so it must come out.

I've never taken mine out, but I have the one from the '85 on the bench for cleaning, so guess what I'm gonna try, just as soon as the temp drops below 115 in the garage.

That should be about Thanksgiving.

Thanks a lot buddies. How come no one told me. I used to try to pack grease in it like a wheel bearing.
