Folks

What is the typical all around MPG for a GoldWing 1800 ?

I have been out on a learning adventure. I joined the BMW fourm, ST1300 fourm and the FJR1300 Fourm. After taking a vacation from Phoenix to Sedona/FlagStaff, I believe I narrowed down my search for a motorcyle.

BMW 1200LT/RT - Issue here is the small dealer network, Final Drive issues and Master cylandr leakeage. I saw many posts on theses issues and decieded not to go with BMW.

FJR1300 - I am 50, I think my direction would be more of comfort than speed. I do most of my riding to and from work, some freeways and main streets. I won't get a lot of oppertunity to do switch backs.

ST1300A - Really appeals to me, draw backs from reading fourm is that everyone gets custom seat for long distance riding. Likes, Its fairly light weight and gets about 45 mpg. being Honda, it's dependable. Plenty of Storage and handles well. The items I would add on that would push the costs closer to the wing, Heated seats and Grips, Radio, GPS, custom seats, trunk, intercom.

GoldWing - Most Comfortable for wife. Comes with every goodie I think I would need that ST1300A lacks. Downside, more pricey, heavy. What I do not know is what the average MPG is for this bike. I searched the Web, Some sites say 35 MPG others say 40-42 MPG ?

Welcome to the forum. I can't offer any good info on th 1800's mpg, but keep watching your post as there are plenty of owners who'll have something to offer.

If it's a weight/comfort thing why not a 1200 series wing,or the ST1300 ? I do have a question though. Why do you need HEATED seats in Arizona ???

In December, Jan and Feb, it can get down to 30 degrees in the morning and can be cold riding to work. I got rid of my car and ride a Vstar 1100 as my sole communting. My wife does have a Van, so I am not car-less

The worstwas 35 mpg. The best was 47 mpg. My average freeway/city at speed limits is 42 mpg. This is an '08 with about4000 miles.

I'm getting about 40 and I have an 08' with just under 1000 miles on it...not even broken in yet.

A friend of mine has a new 1800. He gets about 3 MPG better than my 1500 when we ride together and the 1500 gets 33-42.

Life is Good......Early retirement is better.....

Sit on an 1800 .. it may surprise you as to how well balanced it is. The weight is not as bad as you might think. It seems lighter and easier to handle than my 1100. Test ride one and that alone might sell you on it.

I think you need to rent or borrow an 1800 and ride it for one day. At the end of that day, you will go buy the one you are one, or find one that you can buy.

I had a gl1500se and loved it very much. I traded with a friend and rode his 1800 and covered 250 miles by the end of the day.

My next bike is going to be an 1800.
Better balance, feels lighter and lower when stopped.
Brakes are eons better, the ABS is debatable but I would opt for it.
Pillion seat is the best of them all, and if she is happy, I am elated
The headlights at night are the best ones I have followed on a bike, including add on driving lights.

You loose on some things.
Foot/leg comfort if you have a long set of legs. I am 30" inseam and felt fine though.
Lack of storage space. Learn to pack lighter or pull a trailer.
Costs more. Oh well, depends on your wallet.

ABS is a lifesaveron the odd occasionyou need it In the UK, they only come with ABS, second hand value for imports without ABS is less - a consideration for when you sell.

MPG - we have different size gallons to you guys, our gallon is 4.54 litres.

I can get anything from 150 to 250 miles on a full tank before the light comes on - it realy depends on how you ride. If you push it hard at high speed, or through the gears making it work on the twisties, it gets thirsty. If you are just cruising along at 70 ish, it does very well.

AND it is just so comfortable, easy to handle, has huge road presenceand is everything a bike should be.

Go take a test ride, but be prepared to buy it when you do.

38 to 42 MPG, not bad for such a quick beast.
