A reason to ride

Im blessed that I can ride year around in my region. But sometimes I need a purpose to get me on the road.
Going to the gun range is one of them. But going more then twice a month could be expensive.Besides is the same route with a few variations.
We have found something else to keep us enthusiastic about going places. Geocaching.( read geocashing)
For those who dont know there are thousands of "treasures" hidden all over. Most likely there is a few within 5 miles of your neighborhood. All you need is a hand held gps or a smart phone. A few times I went kayaking and spent hours on end trying to find the treasure. Its a lot of outdoor, healthy, inexpensive fun.Give it a try.

There are many sites. This is a popular one. I have a basic plan so no money. It takes a while to learn to navigate the site but you can filter it by your town and then view a map with location and description.

I logged my first one just a few minutes after signing up. Nothing spectacular, just a plastic tube stuck in a hole in a post. There was another nearby but you have to get the advanced version to find it. Another one a couple miles away but I'll go down there on my dirt bike when the weather is better.

Things may have changed, A quick trip thru The Wayback Machine lands us in the days when you would take some small trinkets on your journey.

When you found a site there would be a logbook, and trinkets to exchange!
Its all smartphone and points now I guess.

Well, right on this site we have "The Photo Scavenger Hunt". No GPS needed and you can use a stupid (non-smart) phone or a camera to get the mark.

I find it odd that this simple "get out and ride" thread has pretty much died out but the geo caching stuff is hanging on in the non-riding community and now filtering into the dos-donut crowd.

Why ain't we ridin'?

The one with the picture is kind of hard to identify unless you live near by the poster or the pic is a popular one.
Geocaches are all over, from a park walk to a bicycle ride, a goldwing ride , or a flyaway trip. You can hide you "treasure" and have fun looking at the posts of people trying to find it or just find them and post them on your log. Some of them are in a sequence so you do a scenic ride or some are time related you can see a certain event(turtle hatch etc) Besides its tough to take a goldwing in a kayak. If you are an outdoors guy you will enjoy it.
Anyway Im in my way to NJ tundra so no geocaching for a little while.

You don't have to live near anybody. You merely find an appropriate mark near enough to ride your bike there and get a pic. (with the bike)

For example, a sailboat can be easily found in NJ or FL. The object is to get out and ride to find the mark. It's not very high tech but it's fun.
