Hey everyone,

I started a thread on this in the beggining of June but I could'nt figure out the pic posting and a few other things and then time got in the way. Instead of resurecting that old thread, I figured I would start a new one.

As of right now the bike is almost ready for me to start spraying paint on the body work , but I am going to post the pics as if Im starting the project tonight.

As you will see from the pictures this was a huge undertaking and Im sure alot of folks would say that it was more work than what it's worth.

In alot of ways I would have to agree , but I have enjoyed this rebuild and I am proud to say that another old goldwing got a new lease on life.

Sit back and enjoy !

I bought this bike at the end of this past May. The idea was to ride it this summer even though it looked like crap, and do a restoration this winter.

As you can see this baby needs some lovin.

Well , the plan of riding it this summer and lovin on it this winter did'nt work out.

When I tried to put it on the center stand the bike went up and kept on going over.

The tube between the frame rails that the center stand pivots on was rotted almost all the way off,

This is the right side ( frame laying on right side.) that bracket is for the brake light switch.

This is the left side.

After I saw what the problem was, it's clear that I wasn't going to be riding this bike this summer.

That's the dirtiest bike I've ever seen. You really have your work cut out for you.

Yes you are right ! I dont think this thing was ever indoors after it rolled out of the dealer.

If you notice in the first few pics, the silver gray color you see on top of the tank and bag lids is actually the silver base for the candy top coat.  The clear and color coat is completely faded off.

I tried to clean the wheels but they were so filthy with road grime and brake dust, it was easier to bead blast them.

So now I got the whole bike stripped down to the bare frame ready for sand blast.

Before I blasted it, I cut out the centerstad tube.

You can realy see in this pic where it was rotted and torn on both sides of the frame.

Once I had the cross tube out, I cut the center stand bracket off.

After it was off this is what was inside.....

Man thats alot of rust!

This rust isnt because this bike wasnt taken care of. It's because Honda didnt put a full weld all the way around tube on most of the tubes on the frame.

If you notice on the very bottom of the tube in this pic there is no weld.

I bead blasted and the treated the inside of the bracket with stop rust.

I dont have step by step pics of the tube that I fitted and welded in but here is the center stand bracket tacked on to the cross tube.

These pics just shows it tacked on. Once I had everthing fitted, measured and squared I ran a full bead around it.

Fantastic, you really did a great job welding and it is good to know there will be another old wing on the road soon. Most people would have looked for another frame, but his shows what can be accomplished with some determination. Everything that comes off the assembly line started of as straight pieces of metal and bent and welded. Of course robotic welded, but with some good welds they can be restored to original or better, as dscribed the welds weren't all the way around trapping the moisture allowing for rust out problems. they should have at least had drain holes so the moisture didn't remain inside.

Great Work, and enjoy the end product.
