The ignition TIMING , (not the dwell angle) is eaysiest to do with a stroboscope lamp and the "timing plug". Maybe the timing plug is difficult to find ,because when i ordered 3 of them ,3 years ago , they told me it was the last ones

Unless I missed it, no one has suggested that the mechanical timing advance could be binding up. Except for the fuel smell, the symptoms are exactly what would occur with this problem.

Could be a bind not allowing one of the fly-weights to swing out, or could be a broken spring keeping one out. I'm with the blacksmith on the approach to it. I've been fooled to many times by the inter-relationship of the not-so-obvious "carb" problems actually being ignition problems. He could have both being issues, but I'd start knocking-down the "could be" to the known in a "ignition first" order. Ignition checks are easier to get out of the way and eliminate as contributing to the problem. Visual inspection goes a long way in eliminating a lot of them.

CaptainMidnigth85 is correct ! I have seen many carbs on bikes and cars "ruined" because of faulty ignition ! And before starting on the carbs , you ALSO need to be sure that compression is correct , (valves /rings and-and )and to messure this correct you need to do a leak test when the engine is hot !(and not just an ordinary compression test ). - AND you must also be sure that the camshaft timing is ok !!

kingarthurup Do you have a repair manual for your bike yet? If so which one, Clymer or Honda's? They will give step by steps on just about all you'll need to do. You also need to replace the plug wires, spark plug caps and the spark plugs. They get corrosion in the wires and the caps crack and leak. The wire can be bought at some M/C shops that carry a roll of it. I bought wires(6'), 4 caps(NGK), and 4 NGK plugs for $30 a year ago. ...a test-light of some sort is a good start. Could buy one inexpensively or even make one up in short order. Worry about advance timing later, as you'll be pulling the points plate and checking the advancer visually and by hand to see if it has any obvious problems of freely moving its parts. Definately need a manual. Check your PM's. There are do's and don't's as far as lubing and such. You don't want any 3-in-1 oil anywhere near them points. Remember to look at those resistors if you haven't already.

Well, got to make sure the points are set correctly and firing off. Got to make sure the point wires are plugged-in there at the battery bo area (bullet connectors), that the coils are getting the voltage allowing the primary to fire-off the secondary to the plugs. Swap the point wires down around the battery box to see if it's a coil that may be bad or if it's a point issue.
