While replacing the timing belts and pulse generators on my 85 GL 1200, I pulled the radiator and to my dismay, no thermostat ! That would explain the long warm up time needed to get the bike to run right and why it was almost impossible to ride when the air temp was in the low 50's and upper 40's Question. Is there a non-Honda thermostat available? Thanks in advance. Moose

This is all I could come up with. Hope someone can get you a part number that you could buy locally.

Rumour has it , that although there are several non-Honda thermostats, that fit in the space, and "function" well .... that only the Honda OEM Thermostat actually opens enough to properly cool a 1200. .. (as in ... non OEM tend to cause overheating on warm days, 'cause they only partially open ) SilverDave

| Wingnut, our esteemed proprietor posted on the Goldwing Tips page that the Stant 13868 and the NAPA 101 thermostats will fit the 1100. According to my parts manuals the 1100 has a Honda #19300-657-003 and the 1200 has #193-MG9-000. Looking at the pictures however the whole assembly, thermostat, housing and the cooling pipes look the same so I'm pretty sure the same thermostat would work for both.

"Rumour has it . . ." Never trust rumors!
Some folks are concerned that the aftermarket thermostats have a smaller opening which could restrict water flow. Good point, BUT here's what I discovered - not from heresay or rumor but by actually testing.
I purchased an aftermarket 180 deg. t-stat (I believe it was a Stant Premium) for less than $10. I took out my old original Honda thermostat and dropped them both in a pan of water with a candy thermometer to show the temp.
At 180 the new Stant began to open, like it should. At 190+ the original began to open, like it should. At just over 200 I shut off the heat and noticed that the Stant Premium was opened much wider than the Honda, so even though the Stant has a smaller hole it opens further meaning the overall flow should be roughly the same.
To be fair, there are several brands and levels of quality in aftermarket thermostats. Maybe I just stumbled on a good one, but there are options to paying big for an original Honda part.

| A CARQUEST 62438 is the exact match, I replaced mine in my 1985 1200 Interstate and it runs great, even in the 90 deg. weather. I paid less than $10. good luck

Sorry I didn't give an actual part number above . The thermostat I used was a Stant #45368 (180 degree).
Also, VERY important!!! You need to drill a small (1/8" is good) hole in the outer flange of thermostat and install with hole facing up. This allows air to bleed past the thermostat when refilling system so you don't end up air locked. The Honda thermostat also has this bleed hole.
