Schweisshund wrote: Ok, I have a puzzle. I have the parts bike motor apart. I am in the process of cleaning everything. However, I went to the other bike, an 83 GL1100 and took the timing belts off. I was able to turn the crank bolt almost completely but it got stuck at one point. I turned it the opposite direction, and it got stuck at the same point.

I then put it in 5th gear, and rolled it backwards and forwards. It got "unstuck". I then put the key in the ignition and the crank turns and turns and turns. What gives?

I took the valve covers off but did not remove the heads. Could a bent valve be making all that ruckus and cause the engine to get "stuck"?
It's unlikely that you had a bent valve or valves but highly likely that you do now.

I had the timing marks where they were supposed to be before all the problems started. The engine idled and ran just fine. I was able to take it up and down the street just fine, then when I gave it some throttle, white smoke came out of the right exhaust and a very loud rattle came from the motor. I took it home, let it idle when everything seized.

Taking the timing belts off, turning each pulley 90 degrees, hand turning the crank and it getting stuck at one point, turning it in opposite direction and it getting stuck at the same point - then putting it in 5th it gets unstuck, then ignition turns the crank .... what happened to initially seize it?

Sorry I failed to read the whole thread once again.:sadguy:

I have no idea what caused the initial seizing but forcing the engine to turn with the belts off and heads still on may have masked the problem and or created more problems.

Rule of thumb is if it won't turn don't force it but instead investigate and find the reason.

YES!
These are interference motors. With the belts off, the pistons hit any valve that is open. Damage to valve and piston, possible the rod too.

Damn

This damage was done BEFORE I removed the belts and quite possibly when PO dropped it.

I have to replace this side anyway, as when it was dropped, it cracked the crankcase on this side and oil was leaking everywhere. Even though the cylinder walls are still smooth, I am sure it is warped.

Between the two motors I should be able to get one. This one took me a heck of a lot faster to dismantle now that I had practice with the parts bike.

I have never given a name to one of any bikes I have owned. I am considering naming this one "Humpty Dumpty".

Everything bad in the dropped engine has been replaced with good parts from the parts bike. The entire crankcase on the dropped bike (both halves) was brittle and cracked. The parts bike crankcase had no cracks.

Evertyhing moves in the rebuilt motor like it should. I am going to install it back into the bike next week.

excellent job on the rebuild and using both engines to make one good one. Keep it up and you'll enjoy riding soon.

Its been in for a week now. I re-charged the battery and took spark plugs out. It did not want to turn over with starter (at first). Then ... I got it to turn over with the starter and drained the battery. Now, it does not want to turn over. I am thinking it is because it needs to be lubricated (I put oil in, but not enough has hit everything inside the motor).

I will figure it out eventually.

Also, it is in 5th gear and gears can't change (also a lubrication problem).

I did the same thing about 6 years ago . I got an 1100 with two bad engines and one of the piston looks the same as yours i now use it as a paper weight . I know people say buy a good engine but theirs nothing like riding a bike and you know you had your hands in the belly of the beast and you got it going again .
