Thats what I did with mine. I stripped the clearcoat ( what was left of it )
off it with paint stripper, wet sanded it up to 600 grit and then polished it on my buffer. You have to be very careful because it is really soft aluminum and if the wheel of the buffer grabs it, it will wrap it up like a pretzel.

Thought I'd post this to show what it looked like before I done the final buffing and replaced the honda emblem. The small pin holes in the garnish, those are there so you can aline the emblem. I done all of this using just the buffing wheels and some some polishing rouge. No sand paper, no thinner or anything like that.
