Whilst removing my rear wheel I discovered both rear silencers are done, the are rusted right through where they clamp to the collector box.

Replacements are quite expensive, the cheapest aftermarket I can find in the UK are £300 ($480), I came across these on ebay.com:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/170715965448?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

Has anyone any experience of these? these work out about £245

Or has anyone a cheaper solution?

Cheers!

Those are Mac. Do Not use. Bad Chrome jobs, won't last. Spend your money on Motad.

E-bay is good & these are new but you may want to check-out a motorcycle salvage yard & when you find a good set of mufflers you could look into getting them powder coated go here wwwsteelscycle.com also there phone #(303)781-5339 good-luck

Go for new oem ones , around 700$ for both , at hdlparts.
- maybe a bit expensive , but your bike and ears , deserve them ! (and they will last another 18 years ).

I've bought a set of (almost new) Harley mufflers that came off an Electra Glide. Does anyone know if the adaptor pipe that's needed to connect these to the wings collector box is available to buy any where, or is it just a case of getting them made to order?

Many thanks for your replies!

Regards

Jim

Jim.

Take a look at this it is a good UK company that gave me good service when I needed to replace my exhausts.

The price was right too.

Keith.

The pipe would have to be made to order for the mufflers to the box. There was a thread about that, do a search in the search box. Harley mufflers GL1500

Hi Keith, you were not too late! I chickened out of the Harley mufflers, I read quite a few threads that reported negative results with the Harley mufflers. Apparently back pressure is affected and to make them work right the carbs should be re-jetted. I know I'll probably be told of several members who run the Harley mufflers with no problems but when I weighed up all the reports and feed-back that I had I didn't think it was worth it. So I went ahead and bought a set as per your recommended.

Many thanks!

I would put a bet on it that your collector box is also shot , very rare for the pipes to be gone and the collector box solid , they usually go right where the pipe goes into them .. make sure you have a good look ,,also get the original honda packers ,as the ones that comes with most of the after market pipes are rubbish ..

MOTADS are the best , I just fitted a new pair on to a 1500 I have here ..

Agreed. Macs look great for all for a few weeks and then the chrome goes bad, rust and more rust.
The Motad_UK guy (Ian) is a member here, he might be willing to cut you a deal on a set of Motads. Can't do any harm to ask by PM. Shipping costs would also be cheaper for your side of the pond.

Now I'm curious. What threads mentioned that rejetting was needed? I have not read of anyone that has actually done this mod on the GL1500's needing to rejet as far as I am aware of or had any issues with back pressure.  The only negative I can recall was that depending on the way they are mounted, they may protrude slightly out the back.

Keith,

How are the exhausts from Sandy's performing? I'm looking for new ones for my wing and I'm interested in how theses look and how they compare with the originals. Are they any noisier?

Many thanks

Mike

Hi Trumpeter
The exhausts are great as far as I am concerned. I don't have any issues with them at all and I would recommend them to any one that asked about them .
They are not noisier than the originals.
