If you have it on the c-stand, you will loose the chain and sprocket in the case.

Daves right can't go any where . The reason for having it on the side stand is that then the chain and gear hang more directly over the openning making pushing the starter shaft on the gear a little easier. Wilf

I'll secondthe side stand. Replaced 2 starters on my 83gl1100I. First one took a year of procrastination and about a half hour of actual work. The second one took 20 minutes. Neveer removed the shifter or exhaust.

I went and checked for vaporlock and it wasn't. So i went and pulled the starter which took me all of a minute or two being as how i had the gear shifter and exhaust removed already, opened it up and low and behold the brushes were worn down too small and there was lots of dust inside, the armature is very dirty and so on... So i definately need to rebuild this thing! Thanks to EVERYONE for your help its greatly appreciated!

I rebuilt the starter because when i got it out and opened it up, the inside was VERY dirty, n one of the brushes had no spring tension holding the brush to the armature. Thanks again for the fantastic link!
