New to an older Gold Wing. I just purchased an 82 with less than 24,000 miles. Radio lights up but does nothing else. Doesn't change channels but changes between AM and FM. Air cleaner was partially eaten by mice. Replaced tires, front fork seals, bearings for the forks, rear brakes and a ton of minor problems. Great compression What should I be looking for? Had a 40 point inspection done. After all the dust from being literally stored in a barn was cleaned away, basic bike looks good. How do I determine which model I have? the first numbers are 1HFSC02----

Assuming it has been sitting for some time, replace the timing belts and clean/rebuild the carbs, clean the gas tank, replace the engine oil and filter coolant and final drive oil. Clean corroded electrical connections and especially the connector to the left of the battery with 3 yellow wires, cut the connector out and solder the wires solid. The radio may just have problems with the switches being dirty. As for model it is either an interstate or aspencade if it has a radio. If it has an onboard air compressor under the false tank lid it is an aspy, if not it is an interstate. It should say which model it is on the tag on the steering head. It should say GL1100, or 1100I or 1100A. The standard could be equipped with a fairing with an aftermarket radio added, as could the Interstate have an aftermarket or even a Hondaline unit installed. We will have to determine what you have there to better help. And welcome to the forum.

You say air compressor. What would it be used for? is there like a little tank? Or is it electric and hooks to the battery. My bike is all apart (at a shop) and I didn't see anything like that. The bike has been ridden on a fairly regular basis, considering our summer is like two months long. It was just kept in a machine shed with a dirt floor. And the guy had a mile long gravel driveway and a couple miles to the nearest paved road. You couldn't believe the amount of dust under the tank and all the plastic. He said the radio worked on about half of his rides, so I'm thinking a loose wire somewhere. Thanks for the replys.

The air compressor came stock only on the 82-83 Aspencade GL1100s It was used to pump up the air shocks and forks, and has a outlet to hook a hose to to air up a tire. I have read some of the other posts on the site for the same problem. I'm hoping it's a stuck key. Attachment: front.jpg (Downloaded 57 times)

Clarion type I radio system. From the description, it does sound like either a bad wire or my guess would be a bad connection on one of the fuses/holders in the fairing. I believe there are roughly 7 different fuses just for the radio so lots of connections to go bad. I would go through these, cleaning all the connections and fuses with electrical cleaner (isopropyl alcohol with a q-tip also works). Let us know how it works. BTW, congrats on teh new bike, post some pics. We love pics! Steve
