Welcome to the forum lewfoer DO NOT use SLIME! IT WILL DESTROY the rims. Ride-On can be used. Google it.

Slime will eat your rims, plus the mechanic will hate you when he removes the tire! Instead use 'Ride-on', this product does not make a mess, and stays against the tire.

I would not recommend it use , at least not for a tubless tire. Have a look at this rim ,which was used with slime . Attachment: been slimed.jpg (Downloaded 190 times)

First of all, review the very impressive rim above from Mike. Second of all using Slime or other "slippery stuff" that coagulates to seal a puncture prevents a good tire plug from sealing insuring you a safe trip down the road to a proper repair or replacement. I can attest to the Second above. The tire plug slowly worked its way out. Had I been riding on SR 261 in Utah last summer with this, I'd probably be in deep do-do. Pack a little compressor with mushroom plugs and leave the slippery stuff alone. Ned

Can't think of any time the word slime has brought to mind a good thing. Also remember tire plugs are a TEMPORARY repair. Use them to get you some place that can put a proper inside patch/plug on. This applies to 4,6,8,10,12,14,16 and 18 wheelers too.

Longboater wrote: First of all, review the very impressive rim above from Mike. While I agree with not using slime, I must comment on the use of "other" sealants. Those interested should read the info given @ http://www.ride-on.com/ . Now, having armed ones self with the correct info as to how much of the tire is protected by the proper use of RideOn and now knowing it is also a tire balancer, one would find out you do not have to plug a tire with a puncture that has been sealed by use of RideOn. I have no idea how large the puncture was you tried to plug. Nor do I know which sealer product you had in you tire at the time but, I can attest to the fact that if you had used RideOn and the puncture was within the area of protection it provides and it was within the protection size limit, it is likely you might not have known you had a puncture until you inspected your tires and found the object, if it was still there. How did you discover you had a puncture to begin with? Did you have Ride On in the tire or another product? How big was the puncture? Where on the tire was the puncture located? Very interested in this info as I have been using RideOn for years in many MC tires. Getting ready to put it in my trike tires!

Not that I would ever use it again, Slime did seal the 11 nail holes I got in my rear tire one day, and it got me home safely. Bill

the one time i used slime to help me get to a bike shop 100 miles away after trying to patch a tire "inside" resulted in a slide at 100+kph after the patch came out of the tire, tire lost the bead and i was broadsiding it down the road, luckily was a somewhat backroad in canada, tire had only a slight leak before the slime but we all thought that it would help, almost cost me a bike and a hospital trip Last edited on Mon Feb 6th, 2012 04:47 pm by neoracer ____________________ "ANY DAY ABOVE GROUND IS A GOOD DAY,ANY DAY YOU CAN RIDE IS A GREAT DAY" |

I used slime on the 25 year old Wooly Bugger ATV tire that had a zipper style break from sitting flat for a year. I rode it for 2 more years without it going down. Put new tires on it and the rims looked great. We use slime in our mowing gear with no problem. Of course by the time the rim might get eaten up the mower stuff is worn out and history. We mow 7 acres every week during grass season.

This is the first time I've heard of Ride-on. It looks like good stuff. I think I'll use it. I sure won't be using Slime after looking at that picture. My tire still has plenty of good tread and I picked up a small tack that has caused a very small leak. The tire is at the point that if I remove it to fix it I might as well replace it but I can still get about another 3-5k miles out of it.

Another item not mentioned is TPMS. The chemicals will ruin the TPMS sensor if the bike is equipped with it. And, most shops will not repair a tire that has any type of fix-a-flat in it. Some of the old types of fix-a-flat used propane in them. Yes, propane. I've been told of a few tires that have exploded by these chemicals. Not the fireball explosions, but the tire going boom because the accelerants kept expanding inside the tires. The slime will also affect the balance of the tire. I have had Ride-on in the last 2 sets of tires, no problems with the rim, didn't even contact the rims. It wipes out and washes out with water. I was hoping that it would be the cure for cupping tires, but no, still getting the cupping. Does it keep the tires balanced, I'm not sure? I'll have them spun on the balancer before they are pulled off in the next month or 2. The one good thing about Ride-on is there has never been a loss of more than 2lbs of pressure in all my pressure checks, from weekly, bi-weekly to monthly on both sets of tires. previously, was loosing 2-5 lbs weekly. Rim beads were clean when the tires that were on the bike when I received it 1 1/2 years ago were pulled off.
