30 mpg 1982 GL1100 -- Why So Low

Mine is very dependent on the speed and riding style. Over 70 mph or so and it starts to suck back the gas. Hard acceleration also does it. This past Saturday I did just over 200 miles of gentle backroad riding (2 up) and got 49.8 mpg, which is the highest I've ever got.

MPG update to my last post- last 2 fill ups 45 and 44 mpg, mostly highway 55-60 mph, conservative on the throttle.

OK, so the carb synk, spark plug, & air filter cleaning didn't make my 26 MPG any better, but keeping my highway speed at 65 MPH or less rather than 80 MPH and my excelleration to 1/4 in stead of 3/4-full on the street got me up to 35 MPG.

WOW almost 10 MPG for acting my age or older.

Not so "SKYTZO" for now. LOL:cooldevil:

Ive been fighting the exact same problem.My front left and rear right plugs looked rich,I was struggling for 30mpg she lugged a little up hills in OD (but I thought that was normal on a big bike)

I did everything mentioned above and then some,and was ready to cough up the big coin for randakks kit,but after reading somewhere about air bypass passsages being plug causing a rich condition I thought Id give it a try.

Sure enough they where plugged on the front left and rear right carbs.

The bike never ran so good,tons more power,clean plugs,38mpg at 80mph on a trip up north just yesterday,and Ive yet to resynch the carbs!!!This is two up,with a tall windshield and wind wings out.

2/3 of a can is way to much! I would do no more than 1/3 of a can, proably more like 1/4 of a can.

To much seafoam in the fuel can do more harm than good.

I would suggest 1/4 can each through two full tanks. Two cap fulls per fill up there after until the can is empty.

From experience I know that too much seafoam can lead to washed out rings and cylinder damage. I killed two diffferent bikes that way before I figured out what I was doing wrong.

Seafoam is a great product and I swear by it. But as with all things moderation is key.

I to get 30-33 mpg but only after I slowed down to 70 and under mph.

I supose if I could ride 55 I would get between 38-40 mpg I would have to take off and maintain VW Van like speed.

I would only get 25 mpg riding @ 80 mph.

That is the best I get after tune ups, and carb rebuild and balance.

Slow and easy is the only way I can find to squeeze every drop out of my 1982 bike.

P.S.

I do have a lot of chrome ant lights.
