I am in the process of replacing the Water Pump on the 1200 and was wondering if I should use Gasket Sealant with the new Gasket, or just use the new gasket. If so which Sealant?

Thanks,

Hamish

I just use a thin layer of Permatex RTV blue to hold the gasket in place as I assemble. I put it on one surface only.

I am doing the same thing with my water pump and thought that Permatex High Tack would work good. Hold the gasket and gives it a very sticky surface.

Paper gaskets always get something on them, dont install dry. If you have nothing like rtv or permatex, than you can use good ol grease. I use rtv because its silicone and fuel, oil coolant will not disolve it.

Whatever you use for gasket sealer use it VERY sparingly so it doesn't migrate anywhere it shouldn't. RTV gasket sealer, Grease or Permatex #2 all will do the job in most cases. Don't use any hard setting sealer or you may have a difficult time if you should have to take the piece off again later on down the road.

On o-rings, never, except as an emergency measure when you don't have a replacement available and need to reuse an old flattened ring.

That hasn't been my experience.  Coolant and oil will not dissolve it but don't get it anywhere that it makes contact with gasoline - it turns to goo.

Its all back together now with no leaks at the bottom end, but I must have either over filled the Rad, or buggered something up at the top end as I am get drips from somewhere up top. It could be the Rad Cap as I am getting steam as well.

Back to the garage then.

Thanks,

Hamish

Some of those caps can be buggers to get on straight.  Folks have suggested using a piece of PVC pipe, with notches cut in one end for the ears on the cap.  This may afford you some extra reach into the confined ares...      :gunhead:
