this is the 4th gear, and it is not the same for 86-87, the inside diameter is different.

the mainshafts appear to be the same, and as mine is still good, I will reuse the original one. but now I'm looking for the 4th gear, or should I reuse it. hard choice, car transmissions don't use these kind of dogs to engage gears so I can't base the decision on experiance. not to metion I need a final drive, drive flange, and rear wheel.:action::(

Gambler, any chance of a picture of the spring loaded damper on the final shaft?

If you need to replace the rear gears and wheel you might want to consider an upgrade to the heavier unit from a GL1500, http://pete-marge.us/Rebuild/

I believe that a couple of fellows from this site have converted their rear drive units as well.

these are the piston holders I made from 3 layers of 1/8" cardboard taped together. worked well, and easier then making them from wood.

fwiw, I wound up reusing the 4th gear after stoning the dogs. also, I think the clymer manual illustration is incorrect for the 87 'wing trans countershaft. mine did not have as many circlips on it as the ilustration. other then that the clymer is light years better then the haynes(I have both).

Thanks Gambler for the torsion damper picture. I took the liberty of lightening it up a bit to show the cam and ramp setup a little clearer. I think this is the source of the 'clunk' some members are reporting when first starting out from a stop. If the cam rides up the ramp it will snap down the moment the torque pressure is eased a bit. It's only supposed to move a very small amount, but should the spring lose a little of it's stiffness over the years this might allow the action of the damper to become a bit exaggerated. Don't know if I can get the picture to work, for some reason I've had a problem with it. Thanks for your effort in documenting the engine rebuild, it's been very interesting and an enjoyable saga. I'm just about as eager as you to hear about the first running of the mill when you get it back together.

seats cleaned up well after hand lapping with the intakes with fine valve lapping compound, and doing the exhaust valves and seats with coarse and fine.

there is some minor pits left, but I think they will seal fine. they don't span the whole width of the seat and I have seen worse seal on car engines.  valve seals were still soft and pliable, but I replaced them anyway. the guides passed my clearence test, and the valve stems look good too.

Looking great so far Gambler.  Anxious to see it all together.

I agree, I just checked mine, it has some wear on the upper part of the u channel, not much, just evidence that it has rotated up the ramp. could be a possible clunk, but ths spring is pretty substantial. I think if I had too I could take it apart with the press at work. but it has no play and I think I will use it as is.
