I have an 86 gl1200A I was riding the other day and my bike backfired once then I lost power. I was able to get it started again but when going into econd gear the problem re-surfaced. After messing with the fuel pump I went on to plugs. They look okay. I found when it was running rough If I removed wire 1 it stalled out. I replaced it and then went to 3 nothing changed so I replaced it and went to 4 no change then when pulling 2 it stalled again. Now it seems to be running fine but I really cant trust it. Does anyone have any ideas? I would appreciate any help given
Look up dieing and backfiring, My 86I started dieing with no warning. Three times all last summer. Got worse this year, would die, but start right back up, sometimes backfiring. Ended up being the pulse coils. There are two of them behind the timing belts. You buy them as a pair. You can test them by removing the false tank and riding until it acts up or you may be able to warm it up in the driveway, and then use an ohm meter and check the coils. You will probably find that one of the coils is opened or shorted with the meter causing the problem. They act as the trigger for the ignition one for one side and one for the other. Most times when one goes it kills the ignition It seems they show first when they get hot, but act normal when cold and only get worse. Got mine for about $80 shipped, but they are going to get harder to get as they are no longer made by Honda. Hope this helps.
