I'm purchasing a 1985 LTD Goldwing.  I am interested to find out how reliable the electronics are on this bike.  Anyone with experience please let me know.

I have read many of the posts and they are very informative.  First time on the board.

I have had a LTD for about 1 1/2 yrs and it is pretty reliable.  Are you talking anything in particular?  Digital display? Wiring?

Two things are happening.  1)  The computer display on the tank will just re-set itself on occasion.  Doesn't affect anything in particular just a nuisance.  2) the bigger problem is the fuel pump doesn't appear to be working.  But this might be a electrical issue also.  I have some technical data that I have downloaded from this sight on how to check the fuel pump.  If the pump works then it's in the electrical part.  I guess I'm kind of worried in that if this bike has a series of electrical issues then would I be better off getting an interstate that has less electrical gadgets.

You seem to have had few problems with yours so maybe mine will be okay.

Thanks for your reply.

I think the biggest thing to remember with these bikes is that all the connections on this or any older bike will need to be cleaned and checked.  A combination of dirt, vibration, and the dilectric grease that was installed when new will yield to bad connections.

The only real problem with the LTD/SEI is the power comsumption and charging system.  You should buy the best/ largest sealed battery you can buy.

I just bought my 86 SEI and most of the handlebar switches would not work.  After taking then apart you can see that the grease is now gummed up with dirt.  one had a spider web in the corner and corrosion on the contacts casue the problem.  Cleaned them well and put new grease in and they worked like new.

I would say  this is most likley the cause of your computer resetting.  I am not sure but would guess that if it lost power it would reset.

I also have an 85 LTD (about 2 years) and it is a GREAT motorcycle but it does have lots of bells and whistles that have the potential to create problems. If yours has been taken care of, I think you should have many miles of great riding ahead of you. Mine now has 82K+ and fortunately the PO had taken excellent care and was very thorough in his maintenance. I haven't had any problems with the digital dash so I can't offer any insight there. As far as the fuel injection system, you are on the right track in checking the operation of the pump. If it proves to be faulty, there are some occassionally on Ebay and I think some folks have identified suitable replacements from ('80's model?) Honda cars.  I had a similar problem shortly after buying my LTD and without knowing enough to scientifically deduce the problem I began by swapping the fuel pump relay and that proved to be my problem. I hope you have similar success. The only other problem I have had (currently have) is a recently developed problem with the air suspension system & controls. I think I have determined that it is an electrical connection somewhere causing the problem but haven't been able to track it down.

I forgot to welcome you .....Welcome to the WORLD'S BEST GOLDWING FORUM!!

As stated, this bike is loaded with bells and whistles.  I think the Tank Computer problem is just a dirty connection or a weak battery.  Do you have a charging issue?

If the pump is found faulty....a Master E8000 will replace it.  About $100 at most auto parts stores.  Replaced mine over a year ago and no problems.

Go through the bike and check/clean all connections, switches, wiring.  Make sure your charging correctly, check the 3 yellow wires and make sure the connection for them has been taken out and the wires soldered together.

You are not too far away and we even have members who could help closer to you.  All ya gotta do is holler!!  I have ridden farther just to say HI!!:cheeky1:

Check out the link in my signature.....some great folks to ride with....hopefully you can join us!!!
