Hello to all,
I recently purchased a 1986 Goldwing Aspencade SEI with only 5400 miles.
The bike will start and rough idle but when I try to go for a ride it feels like it is not getting gas and dies on me.I keep giving it throttle but it just bogs down and dies.
It then will not start again.
I had to push it home (1/2 mile ) and I replaced spark plugs, checked fuel pump and it still will not run. Gas was drained and fresh gas with fuel injector additive was put in bike.
It starts but I cannot ride it.
ANy help is greatly apprecieted.
Thanks ,
Vinny P

| Check the fuel filter. It's on the left side of the bike near the battery (towards the front from the battery). It has a little chrome cap on it with banjo type fittings top and bottom.

Thank you.
I did buy a new fuel filter and have not installed it yet.
I had removed the line off the fuel pump amd when I turn on the key I do get a steady stream of gas.
Is the fuel filter after the fuel pump line I checked?
Thanks again,
VIn P

I believe the 86 bike has a fuel shut off tap on the right side of the motor as you sit on the bike. Check and make sure the tap has not been turned toward the off position. From what you are saying it sounds like a fuel stavation problen I encountered on my 85se. Also check the fuel filter as suggested above. Start checking at the bottom right side of the tank and follow through to the filter and I think you will find the problem. My old 85 would start like a charm and then when you tried to give it the gas it would start to die. You could run it at low speed 20/25 miles per hour and anything over it would cough spit and almost die and when you let the throttle off it would start to idle normally. After it died and After sitting a few minutes enough fuel would flow and it would start like a charm again.

Hi to all,

Styars up after stiing for awhile but I cannot ride it as it keeps stalling.
Any more suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

| Check the bone fuse next to the battery. As they get old they crack its hard to see. Cut out that fuse holder and replace it with a blade fuse(heavy duty). When you start the bike what voltage are you getting?

| Seafoam is used to remove water from the fuel in the tank the lines the carbs,it also cleans the jets and outher carb parts.you can get it at any auto store in the states.

You mentioned earlier about a steady stream of gas. The EFI system should carry 36PSI in the fuel line. This isn't what you would call a 'steady stream', more of a good squirt. Its worth checking the fuel pressure regulator and even the fuel pump - may have become tired. Les

Being as that's low milage 23 year old bike and you say she'll run good for about 10 minutes before taking a dump, I'd check the fuel tank for rust as it sound's like the fuel filter is becoming plugged.
Mine had set for about 7 years when I got her and the fuel tank was garbage! Take a flashlight and take a look inside the tank. That might be the problem.

Vinny,
What you need to try to do is to either confirm or rule out fuel pressure as the issue. The best way to do that is to monitor the fuel pressure while you ride it. I did it on my LTD a couple of years ago. You need to get one of those fuel pressure guage kits from Harbor Freight or on ebay (like the one in the attached pic). There is a six millimeter bolt (10 mm head) on the right side fuel rail (behind the shiny CFI cover). The fuel pressure tester has a six millimeter attachment hose and you can zip tie/tape the gauge to the right side of the fairing (over the locking pocket cover. You can then watch the pressure as you ride.
The pump or the pressure regulator may be fine when cold, but once things get warmed up, they can act weird. You could also have junk in the fuel tank that is plugging things up, even with a new fuel filter. The only way to know for sure is to check the pressure.
If the fuel system checks out, there are several other possibilities, but we can worry about those once the fuel supply checks out.
Let us know what you find out.

Check the bikes history. Was it ever owned by Bill Gates?

Bike was picked up today by well established Honda dealer.
I tried all suggestions above but bike just wont take gas once it is warmed up.
I will let all know what the dealer discovers.
Again thanks to all for the help

| Even though it has low miles, that sounds like the typical "dying crank sensor". It just depends on the environment it's been exposed to the last 20+ years. You should have an error on ecu while cranking. Did you look at the led's on the ecu, under trunk, on the left side while cranking? If it's the crank sensor, good luck finding one. The supply dried up cpl. years ago. A dealer search may turn one up, or a used one may be available from 123Whitey on ebay. I wouldn't trust a used one at all, tho. I wish I had my LTD back, so I could experiment with an exact replacement. I often wondered if 1 of the 2 crank sensors from a 1500 would work. If that's the problem, and you find a replacement, be aware that the leads may have to be reversed or it still won't run right. Reverse the leads in the plug body at end of sensor, using a tiny pin, drill bit, jewelers screwdriver, or something skinny to bent the little tabs on the wire end.

To all,
Honda dealer has found rust in the gas tank. They are in process of removing tank and flushing the system.
Bike came with a brand new fuel pump assembly and dealer will be installing it as well....They are cleaning injectors and hope to have bike ready for pick up tomorrow.
Thanks to all for the hep.
