its almost time for me to replace the front tire on my gl1500i (again). i put atleast 10k miles on the bike a year so i want one that will last as long as posible when it costs about $250-300 everytime i replace the front tire & even more for the rear. i have streatched 2 dunlop k177s for 25k miles each & now have a donlope e3 with 20k miles on it & at the were indicators.

i'm looking for a longer life tire over super traction, so what is the best bet:

michelin pilot gt

dunlop e3

dunlop k177

metzeler me 880

avon am41

some other brand or model i haven't heard about for the gl1500

If all you care about is wear, the Dunlop E2's are probably best by that specification.

The Dunlop 491's are even longer wearing, but they are useless on wet roads, and proper grip would be more important to me. I'm not sure they still make the 491's.

Your mileage seems extreme. I am looking for new tires at about 10 to 12,000 miles no matter what I am running and I always change the tires as a set. With only two tires under me on a motorcycle I want good rubber at all times. I have used the Elite3's and Metzlers. I prefer the Metzlers overall due to many factors but most importantly traction.

If you are looking to save money, consider pulling the wheels off yourself and taking them to a shop for mounting and balancing; that usually saves me a pretty penny.

i realize from what i have seaen people post that i'm getting higher milage. i do run them into the wear indicators but i haven't slicked over any of the front tires or worse yet never had threads showing. i ride just 1 up & don't pull a trailer (rarly ever load the bags with much cargo (i have only done 2 long trips that i didn't have someone going with a mini van that i through all my extra stuff in). i have run 2 rear donlop k177 for 32k & 30k miles but i did slick them over before i was done (but still no threads) which apears to be double what everyone else gets. i do alot of leasurly rides on state highways were i put it in 5th gear & barely give it any gas. i do like to play in the curves but i never push it to the point of scraping my pegs (stock pegs as far as i know).

Where are you buying tires at $300./$350 a crack and how do you get 20k on a front tire?? Aren't there any turns in New Jersey??
Try American Tire for your next purchase you can buy them two at a time and not worry about mileage and have some fun.........

I like the E3's! They last too. I agree with changing your own (especially the front) tires. I usually spend about $250/pair on Ebay or MAW.

the dunlop e3 & k177 run $120 & up on the internet (motorcycle-superstore.com & denniskirk.com are the cheapest i've found them) or from my local independant motorcycle shop $140+ then you add valve stem, shop supplies, labor, & tax, the total for a front tire replacement cost $250+ ($180 & up for a rear & more labor makes them $350+ total each job). which is still much better than my local honda dealer that said front or rear any brand/ model tire available would be $400.

as far as getting 20k+ miles i'm not sure, i just do. i went through the dunlop safety check at honda homecoming a couple years ago & told him i had 17k on the donlop k177 he was looking at & he said it looked more like only 10k & they usually wearout by 15k. this is the only bike i've ever had so maybe i didn't get into bad sport bike habits before getting the wing to cruise.

Boy I guess across the country it's whatever the traffic will bare price wise on tires and installation.. Look like they really vary..
I don't know if the wear is bad habits or where I do most of my riding.. On a lunch run I can cross 3 mountains passes to almost 10k feet, the Sierras.. The roads there are not silk smooth that takes a tole on wear and yes I do push it to the edge.. Wings are not only for cruising, you can play to..........

Dangerous to be mixing a radial with a bias ply tyre ,,the 1500 takes bias ,not radial .Ciaran

I have no problem mixing tire brands.. I think most Major tires are made very well.. Some tires have different properties and do different things.. It's all in how and where you ride..
I won't use radials on a 1500, I don't think the rims will hold them..

I think the radials are great but you need more pressure in them and they need to be rated for the weight of a Wing!!!, the Rims will hold the radial just fine,

I have an E3 on the front of mine with over 21,000 Kilometers and it's about half worn. No abnormal wear/cupping problems and fairly quiet. I have a Dunlop K177 with over 21,000 Kilometers on the rear and it's time to change. It's cupped now and singing out when the bike is leaned over. Just about to put a new E3 on the rear, before the trip down to Calhoun.
