i have an 81 gl 1100 standard with 100,00 km on the clock.
at 100 kph my rpm;s are 4000.is this good (seems high)
im getting about 340 km to a full tank (is this good)?
also while shifting into 2nd and 4th gear....im getting some grinding every once in a while at higher rpm's (rebuild time?)
other than that the bike is running great.i have put about 2000 km on it since i bought it a few months ago.

RPM sounds perfect, take care of the grinding by running a 15W-50 or 20W-50 oil. Sounds like you're having a little viscosity breakdown.

I added about 12oz of Lucas oil. My engine sounds better and my shifting improved. I also use 20-50wt.

Might also check the clutch adjustment. Older Goldwings are NOT built for leisurely touring. The seats are the least comfortable over a long period unless you opt for a Saddleman or Corbin. You need earplugs if you go above 90K because the engines sound like they are going to explode. If you're over 6' the leg room is cramped because of the cylinders. But it's like having an old VW or something. They are kind of addictive and you can buy bling for them.

Sidewalkman pretty well summed up how I feel about my 83. It's crude, loud, rattly, rough and likes to rev vs. lope along at 2k. But that's what gives it charm! Plus everyone asks about the bike.
Haven't had mine very long, but I seem to get about 200 per tank if I let it run almost dry. Mine's running rich though so would probably do better than that when I adjust the floats. Mixed city/highway got me 33mpg the last tank, I expect over 40 this time.

The GL1100 is a great touring bike and if you have a lot of engine noise if you go over 90 KPH (55.93 MPH) something is wrong with your engine. I've owned my '83 Interstate since new and have been on long trips running at 75 MPH (120.7 KPH) and my engine is running like it did over 25 years ago and doesn't have the symptoms you decscribe as to "the engine sounds like it's going to explode". Still have the original seat which I find comfortable.

| GoldWinger, does your transmission rattle like a can of bolts? Just trying to get a feel for what's normal on these 83's. Mine is identical to yours.

I think he is looking for a representative answer about used wings as opposed to a babied since new model. Mine is pristine, 36K KM (not miles) and I ride with a bunch of wingers on everything ranging from GL1100s (Interstate) up to GL1800 with every variant in between. Mines runs the smoothest of the older wings, and except for a slight puff on acceleration because of valve stem oil seals is mechanically perfect.
I'm 6"4 and 240 and all of us with older wings will tell you the stock seat sucks. And a supposed touring bike that runs at over 4000 RPM at under 120KMH is not really a tourer.
I love the bikes, but let's be realistic.

I'll agree, at 6'3" and 285, the stock seat sux yak balls, and so does the seating position...but those are easy fixes.
Lucas? William's right, that stuff is not good with a wet clutch, but I did find that Slick50 does a fantastic job and doesn't effect the clutch at all.
If your engine or transmission are rattling to the point of being an annoyance, then there is something internally wrong with your engine. I've got over 110,000 miles on mine, and it certainly hasn't been "babied" since it was new...but it still purrs like a kitten when I hit the switch.

I dont seem to have any strange noises in my 83 either.
Also she likes to run 4000 rpms the most.Purrs good there, just did 5 hours home the other night at 70-75 mph and around 4000-4200 rpm with no troubles other than a drop in millage.

The 83 interstate I had(130,000mi) would run 70MPH (115K) as smooth and quiet as anything, and get 47mpg doing it. The 81 std while turning more RPM at the same speed was very smooth and quiet also, hard to even tell it was running and didn't get quite the gas mileage but the 83 has higher gearing.
Lucas oil treatment will not hurt the clutch. It is printed right on the bottle, OK for motorcycle wet clutches at 10% of the oil capacity.

My '83 Interstate is not "babied" on the road but I've taken care of the bike and have done proper maintenance and when not riding, the bike is always garaged. That's not babying, it's taking proper care so it will last a long time.

Love my '83. She purrs like a kitten too. RPMS are about 3500 when cruising at 115km an hour or so. By contrast, my husbands 82 is about 4000 rpms at the same speed. It feels buzzy to me since I'm used to my bike. Seat is ok for me, but I think I will invest in a sheepskin cover just for more added comfort. I really have no annoying rattling noise to speak of. If anything, it is a little noiser until it warms up good, then no problem. She's smooooooothhhhh sailing

My 80 1100 is very tight, revs easily and at max 8000 occasionally, mpg is great and its getting better each year. Seat sucks but I'm more to blame because of physical limitations. sUSPENSION IS ideal and brakes are great. Tranny is solid, no whines. Its hard to beleive I'm 9th owner, and I think the other 8 took their turn screwing this bike up. It is now sound and trustworthy as the day it was built, but that took plenty of work from me. But as designed it is quiet, revs about 3700-3800 at 62 MPH and it has done mant trips at all speeds. I think it is a sold bike, so much so that it was an influence on my neighbour to sell his HD and buy a wing, 1990

Neil,
Change your oil and get the Lucas junk out. It can do more damage than good. As MDKramer said, Change your oil to what he recommended, or use Chevron Delo 15W40. It exceeds the specs on our older Goldwings.

Gas Mileage...
On my last check, I filled it up with Shell 93 Octane, (The only fuel I use) and I used 1.1 Gallons to 47.8 miles on my 1980 GL1100. 45-50mph up, 65-70mph back. Seems to be purring like a kitten right now. (Hopefully, It will stay like that.) The older wings are somewhat uncomfortable on a long trip, but it is still a beautiful bike, and probably one of the most preferred.
