It seems my 1983 Interstate has recently developed a something gettting hot problem.  When I use the clutch I believe I smell something too hot.  I don't smell it at idle, reving it while parked, or riding.  It seems just when I shift.  I thought I even saw white smoke on the left side of the engine shortly after shifting from 1st to 2nd.  This has come up the last couple of rides.  It has happened enough I don't think I am imagining it.

Any ideas??  I sure would appreciate any ideas you have.
Thank you.
Steve

I don't see how using the clutch could do what you describe. The clutch is inside the crank case on the right rear so it wouldn't affect anything on the left side and since it's enclosed you couldn't smell it. Check the seal where the shifter shaft enters the case for an oil leak, it may be dripping oil on the exhaust when you shift.

A short time ago someone saw smoke from the left side which turned out to be the little black condensate collector thing was full and leaking.
Worth a check. Pull that thing off and empty it or maybe the hose is leaking.

Maybe you have a leak. Put a white piece of paper under the bike, pull the clutch lever in and shift it a few times. See what drips out.

And definitely check that condensate tank doodad like he said, mine was half full.

The hot smell has continued.  So, I checked the condenser.  It was half full and not leaking (I emptied it and no change).  I think I did find something when I had it on the lift tonight.  There is a whole on the bottom of the water pump that seems to release liquid.  Please see my following pictures.  What is this hole for?  Is it supposed to have a plug?  I gently put a probe into the hole over 1 inch, it looked like burned antifreeze dirty liquid gel.   I do think the smell is antifreeze, and I think that would explain the white smoke I have occassionally seen.  I wire brushed the area before the picture, you can see where it has been getting wet (shinny spot).

The antifreeze is a little low, still some in the reserve, I will fill up to appropriate level.  Should I keep driving it.  I am watching the temp. closely, no problems so far and we have had some hot summer Kansas days recently.

I appreciate any continued help?

Steve

That is the weep hole for the waterpump. You need a new waterpump. By the clear spot near the hole it looks like it has been leaking for a while...

I agree.  I also found some other related posts.  So, should I replace seals only OR replace pump AND seals???  A $150 difference which is not that big of deal, however would buy some gas.  I really appreciate the advice about the poor aftermarket pump and seal from Saber Cycle in KC, won't be getting those products.  Comments about OEM have me sold.

I replaced just the seals on my 83 Aspencade about 5 years and 55,000 miles ago.  Hasn't leaked a drop since.

If it has been leaking for a while the bearings are bad. Easy to check the bearings. Remove the spigot that is in front of the pump housing that the lower hose fastens to. Two 10mm bolts I think. You can then reach in with a couple of fingers. If the impeller movea any at all from side to side the bearings are gone. In any case about the only way coolant can come out that hole is if it is leaking at the mechanical seal...

If you gotta go in you might as well have a new pump in hand as the front engine cover has to come off....

I decided since I was going to have the water pump assembly torn apart anyway, I might as well replace pump with a new OEM water pump. Plus, like mentioned, the mechanical seal may be the problem and that comes with the pump I believe.

Thanks for your help. I'll let you know how it goes.
Steve

I just realized I screwed my earlier answer up! I re-read your post and it clearly says you are leaking water. Mine was leaking OIL. I haven't lost a drop of OIL since I replaced my seals. Since you are leaking water, I would say you need a new pump.

Sorry if I confused the issue any!

Bob
