Took my wheels off last week to get new tires put on. Took front off first, when I took off the back the back started to tip forward! I was able to grab the exhaust pipes and let it down easy till it was resting on the front forks. Bike seemed stable so I left it there for 3 days until I got the wheels back and put them on. That was obviously the wrong thing to do as now it is very hard to start, runs rough and seems to have less power. So, what did I do and how to fix it?:?

Hope you can get some insight on that, it would be interesting to find out what happened.  Think the floats in the carb's may be stuck or off kilter??

may just try tapping the bowls slightly with the handle of a screw driver and see if that will free it up......if it is a float problem.....I'm so interested because the bike I'm getting will need two tires, and I don't want to make the same mistake:shock:

Learn from my mistake. Make sure the bike is evenly balanced and put blocks under it once its up.

Call me paranoid but I screwed eye bolts into my ceiling beams to attach straps to the triple tree/handle bars and rear frame. Falling bike doesn't sound fun.

that's a dam good idea with the straps after you get jacked up tighten the straps and it would give alot of support when wrenching on things

:hovering:One of the better safety Ideas I have heard lately

I've posted about unbalancing bikes on a jack several times here. I use a small step stool I knocked together out of scrap to put under the wheel on one end or the other of the bike when I'm removing a heavy part. I put it under the front wheel when removing the rear wheel. The stool is made just the right height so I can raise the jack up all the way, slip the stool under the wheel and then let the jack down onto the safety catch which will put the wheel onto the top of the stool. Been doing it this way for about four years now, the bike will sit nice and solid with no tendency to rock. If you're taking off both wheels it's best to take off the rear first. If you load the bike on the jack just a little bit tail heavy by slipping the jack a bit forward when you lift when you remove the rear wheel the bike will just settle right near level. I unbolt the front wheel which causes the bike to level up once the wheel is free and sitting on the stool. If you have a helper, they could stabilize the bike while you remove the wheels. Once both wheels are off the bike balances pretty much where it did with both wheels on it. It works the same with 1000, 1100, 1200 and 1500s..

When I did my front fork seals I used a couple of car jack stands, with a towel on them, under the crash bars one on each side.  It seemed to make a very stable bike as I could stand on the foot pegs on either side while trying to get the top back on the each fork.

Some Seafoam in the tank and about 20 minutes of riding seems to have corrected the problem. I'm guessing the floats were stuck out of position.

exavid,
can you post pics of your step-stool setup? I use 2 car jack stands with a 2x4 between them, but your idea sounds easier to set up!

Sorry, can't do, the shop is all packed up. Here's an older photo I shot when working on my 1500, if you look closely you might see the support under the rear wheel, also I have a jack under the front of the engine since I was doing some pulling and pushing to check out the steering head bearings while I had the front wheel off.

Man, I'm gonna miss that shop!:(

I took 4 tie down ratchet straps and put them on the corners of the jack stand, and when I get it jacked up, I strap the bike to the stand. Not a perfect solution, but it sure helps.

I was going to advise checking your plug wells. You said its been raining most part of the week.if the drasin holes are clogged and water accumulated in the wells the cyl will be grounded and give you a bad ride.as for lifting the bike. I work outside due to my living situation.
I lift my bike and tie it to 2 cinder blocks. The blocks weighing down the rope. This was good enough whike doing my fork seals to apply required down force on fork springs. Compressing them enough to reinstall the fork caps. That was a lot of weight on force applied and the wing stood her ground like a brown belt in karate.

An excellent suggestion. My wife reminded me last night that we had the same problem about a year ago when we were headed out for an organized ride- and she had washed the bike the night before. I will have to pull the plugs and check the drain holes.
