I'm doing my 1200's carbs now too, kept having idle issues. And if you all are planning a group ride soon, I meant be interested as well

I just realized that you are a female.knowing that you are somewhat mechanically inclined makes me think this shouldn't be that tough. I did it in one afternoon with these large hairy mitts getting in the way. Give yourself 2 dsys. One to remove everything and get familiar with the way things are aranged and one day to take the carbs apart clean and reinstall. This should go a lot smoother now that you will be familiar with it.
I did mine 3 times due to rushing. Although a pain it has made me very educated on the system and now find it a piece of cake.
Get in there champ. You'll be fine, with our help of course.

I don't know if it always has to be carburetors. You should do a compression check before you do much of anything else. I suppose 125PSI+ and maximum variation of 10%. A screw in gage set is available at harbor freight for a nominal fee. Don't buy carb kits from anyone that isn't recommmended here. I did, got lousy quality kits, and paid too much. But my bike do run good now.

As an addendum to the above. I just checked my Clymers manual it says compression should be 170 p.s.i.with a maximum difference of 15 p.s.i. Personally, that sounds kinda high, but that's what they say. Compression gages can vary in accuracy, so if you get a very high or low reading, check it again with a known accurate gage.
