While performing maintenance on my 1991 SE, I noticed that the carb slides only pull in approximately 1/4 of an inch when running. I cleaned them and I can manually push the all the way in with no resistance. Is the 1/4 about right, or is there a problem?

The fact that they move is a positive sign. I've not noted how much mine move but unless you are aware of a running problem, I'd say if it's not playing up, don't fix it.

the sliders only barley move when the aip filter is off as to much air is sucked down the barrell of the carbs they come into there own when the filter is on if they move smoothly by hand with out sticking all is ok

37, make sure the slides don't have any scratches or gouges in them. both of mine have been scratched badly.enough to keep them from moving properly.i was amazed that my 93 ran as good as it did.
once i found this problem, the poor idling made more sense. i'll let you know how the repairs worked (new slides arrive tomorrow)

best to all
Robin

The reason I found this was that the 'wing got stuck out in a raging downpour uncovered. Two days later when the weather cleared, the bike wouldn't turn over. I remembered a thread here about rain water making its way into the carbs and filling the cylinders. That is exactly what happened to my 'wing. The PO installed a K&N airfilter and didn't get the aircleaner cover back on properly, leaving a large gap at the front. Six and half inches of rain later, I got a problem. Everything is corrected now and the 'wing is running great.

Is oil a good thing for moving parts is a carb!

I use good ole carb cleaner spray to clean everything and to get oil off.  After they are clean, I surely do not lube them.  I would be in fear that the oil would eventually gum up them sliders to stick.  And, I hate going into the carbs even to replace the filter.

Old old engines use to have an oiled air filter.  I am glad that is not a common practice today.

If your sliders only open up a 1/4 inch, you have a problem.  You may have only noticed a 1/4, but under load they may actually be opening up.  You do have plenty of power, right?  If they do not open, no air, no power.  Choke it a little and momentarily twist the throttle wide open.  A slight twist of the throttle with the engine at 5,000 rpms does not have the air flow or vacuum to pull the sliders open completely.

The old girl runs like a strpped a__ ape!!!. I will hit rediline with the exhaust dumps open almost immediately (and accelerating too quick for a touring bike). I have a slight hesitation at about 1000 rpm, but when I hit 1500, watch out. I can stay next to a Katana (crotch rocket) easily. I think I will leave well enought alone until I find a 4 degree wheel for the right price!!! Foosman, if you get over this way, give me a shout!!!
