Pretty chinsy but might work for a while. Find a piece of round stock the same diameter as the brass. Cut the stock to the same length as the brass. Drill a hole through the stock big enough to fit the cable. slide the cable through the hole and tack weld it on the other side. It is possible to get a half way decent weld if you are patient. Low heat. Now release the clutch end, put tthe replacement in the clutch lever. Put the clutch end back and adjust. Then pray.

| I've put new ends on control cables by drilling through a bolt shank the same diameter as the barrel on the cable was, cutting it to length and soldering the cable to the new barrel. I use a bit of acid flux to get a good flow of solder. I've made up cables by shortening the outer housing and the center wire that way. The orignal attachment of the barrels to the cable is usually done with solder, it's easier on the cable strands since they don't get heated as much as when being welded. If you have an inch to play with you might be able to repair the end of the cable, first adjust for the most slack you can get then put a new end on the cable.

Morriscat,
Take the okd broken piece that come off the clutch to AutoZone, or yyour local Auto Parts, and you can get an end to fit it. They come in Crimp or Screw tighteners. If you need a clutch cable, I have one. Just PM me for the price.

| Vice-grips??? works it a pinch. Wrap in cloth so they don't band up the paint.

Thanks NightRider1, thats the answer i need at least for a few days... then perhaps a new cable..
The other day I was watching a lady walk by with nothing on but a flipflop sticking out of her but.. She caught me looking and said.. "surely you've seen a lady wearing a Thong before"..

| I used vise grips, take adjuster out of level stick cable back through hole where adjuster was and pull cable out so it will lay on clutch level and clamp down with vise grips. It will get you by until you can get away to fix good. I fix one on a 78 gl1000 a freind bought to get it to his shop.

Just get a cable connector from your auto parts, and it would cause no worry (Carry the piece you cut with you)

| Best get the conector. Not likely to get solder to flow and stick to the cable. Tom Last edited on Tue Aug 26th, 2008 05:31 pm by dingdong

| NR went to auto z and they were out of the only type had normally, but guy said it was just like what I had except not brass. So will try to usa acid flux and screw to see if that will hold in couple hours.

I used a solder on end to repair the clutch cable on my GL1000. I cut off a few wraps of the outer housing, and flaired the wires a bit to prevent pullout. I think the brass end had a set screw too (long time ago). Never did replace the cable after that.
