Praise to the answer guru's once again... I have a dilemma in search of the answer.
GL1200 was charging at 14.5 or 14.6V at speed... then I noticed she was at 12.5 or so... Oh oh.... checked battery and was very low on fluid. Replenished with water... is charging just the same. Did the stator test (continuity to each yellow, none to ground) = OK. Assumed it was regulator/rectifier. Bought a new one. Same low V charging.
Questions are:a) what component gets screwed up with 1/2 full battery cells? and b)is this my problem?
Many thanks

You may have a battery issue. It doesn't take long to kill those little suckers when you run them low on water.......

If your battery checks out OK, check the AC voltage coming out of the 3 Yellow wires. Its possible to have a shorted phase in the stator. It would read as having continuity. You should get 30 volts or more of AC voltage across all pair combinations when the engine is reved up.

Mine does the same thing, with a new battery and healthy stator test (17-65v). Only thing I can think of is the R/R, but you said it's new.
I had a similar issue on my 99VFR. There was a writeup on how to run extra ground wires off the negative battery terminal, and also a positive going...somewhere, can't remember. I did all that and it really solidified voltage at idle, around 14v. Bad connections really suck the voltage down.
Might as well take the battery in to get it tested. Battery mart can test MC versions.

| Check your ground cable where it hooks to the engine. Just a bit of corrosion there can drop your voltage enought to screw things up good.

Will have battery checked at local bike shop and will do the hot and ground connections tonight. If no diff, I'll check the AC V.
Thanks gentlemen.

| whilst your checking around with the wires, make sure the stator plug connecter at the left side of the battery is in good shape and no signs of burnt wires, also check out the plug at the top of the solenoid to see if its not fried, also check the wires around the rectifier especialy the yellow wires

Good advice... already had done the job of soldering the yellows bypassing the rec/reg plug, and the other connector down near battery you speak of, so they are good to go. Cleaned and greased the plug for the rest of the wires out of the rec/reg too so I don't suspect it either. All wires are still colored properly, and flexible (i.e. not fried) so it looks as though the stator is OK. I don't know the symptoms of a failing battery other than it can't be charged... so so far, the battery makes the most sence to me, and I will ensure that all other grounds and main power connections have good integrity as well.
I tell a LOT of people about this forum and how exceptional it is. Well done to everyone who contributes!

Well, I found the problem. Battery tested bad, replaced, still same problem ... low V. Today re-did stator test but checked for AC V output from stator while not plugged into anything... one phase gives 1.3v, the other two are OK (40-65 or so depending on rpm). Conclusion: time to pull engine and replace stator.
Need advice: Who makes the best replacement or is there a permanent fix made by anyone? ..Honda or aftermarket product (Electrosport or RM or some other)
