| 1500 does not have a stator it has a regular alternator some one will be along soon to give you a test procedure but on the other 3 yrs is not that bad of battery life depending on the brand of battery

The '89 has an external alternator, not an internal stator like the older models. Just check you voltage to see if bike is charging properly.

| the battery that was in there when i bought it(last april) was an interstate battery, not to mention when i started having problems , i noticed the acid/water level was down to half, filled it up(with water) thinking problem solved but i was wrong, the only reason I question the alternator was that a neighbor with a 93 wing told me 1500's alternators were good for about 75,000 miles, is this true?

| First if the battery was 1/2 empty it is no good. Damage starts as soon as the plates are not covered with electrolyte. The stator does not fail like the 1200. Instead the GL 1500 has a little history with alternator rotors failing. As far as mileage is hard to say. It is very easy to take out and inspect. 3 bolts and 2 wires. Then you at least know what you have when you open it and peak inside.

My 93 has over 125,000 with the original alternator, and still charging good. 3 years on a wet cell motorcycle battery is about right, if the battery was half low/ half full, then I would probably suspect the plates in the battery are too corroded to really take a good charge anymore, especially if the battery has been that way awhile. probably just need a new battery.

| The early 1500s had very tough alternators, the later years were not as well built.

If it were me, I'd open it up and check the brushes. It could be as simple as sticking brushes. If you've ever taken apart an automotive alternator, you'll be right at home.
Also, make sure the rear bearing spins smooth. They do go bad but will make noise when they start getting rough.

| Matt G nailed it. The early 1500's were good. Mine is a 1999. 50,000 and on its second. I have a brand new spare in the garage so I don't get caught again! Rotors fail. By the time you buy the rotor might as well buy complete.

Hi well i just replaced the alternator on my 96 wing with 49,000 miles on it.
After checking all the replies here in the forum i found a guy that rebuilds 1500 alternators, i contacted him only to find out he lives about a mile from me (what luck huh)
I went and talked with him about the problems with the alternators, this is what he told me on the 94, 95 and 96 wings honda was having them made in china not japan so the quality went down big time.
He also said most of the time it's the rotor that failes (bad wiring), so i got a rebuilt one from him for 150.00 and so far it's working great.
Just a side note, i did buy a brand new alternator from honda, but before i got it i found this guy. When i recieved the new one i noticed that it had made in japan stamped on it, so i guess honda might have learned cheaper is not always better.
Safe riding all
