Most likely it's the stator that's gone bad.

What kind of bike, and year is it?

 Round headlight-83, square- 84

8th letter from right of VIN: D is 83, E is 84

How much seller wants for the bike? What is mileage?

:waving:1983 was the last year of the GL1100 and 1984 was the first year of the GL1200.  So what do you have?  A GL1100 or a GL1200?  You most likely have a '84 GL1200 and the 1200's were notorious for stators going out.

I lost my alternator after my last bike trip to Georgia      In 2001, the local dealer quoted me $550.00 for a new stater and $900.00 to install.   Did it myself over a week-end and a new clutch pack for under $300.00.:D

But there's no way I'd ever do it again.  The "POOR BOY" method is the way to go.  Easier access and less expense for future repair/replacement.  Not to mention you also have a greater wattage output...                        :gunhead:

Something like this I do not mind the work at all but the extra power available could be a real bennefit is certain cases.

The poor boy is a way of adding a drive pully to the front of the crankshaft and mounting a small car alternator to the front of the bike and driving it with a belt from the crank pully.    I know I will screw up the spelling but Donald "Poorboy" Pigot?? sells some of the critical parts or he used to. Not sure if he still does?

It's Piggot, and yes Whiskerfish, he does.

And as soon as I get a package in the mail to him, there's a good chance he'll have a bolt-on for the 1100 as well as the 1200.

He can be contacted at:

I think that's just the start of your problems, a used "oldwing" will have many more difficulities. Sort of like us as we get older and worn out.
Try to find a newer wing.
