I have a new GL1800. I noticed that the tachometer seems to emit a loud whiney noise. When I pull in the clutch, the noise seems to reduce. This seems pretty strange to me, but doesn't seem to show any other signs of problems. Is this something that I need to be concerned with? Gasseous

Are you sure it comes from the tachometer ? when i got mine new i could hear a whistle type noise and it was explained to me as injector noise, don't even notice it now. I used to get a whining noise at about 125mph but that was the missus over the intercom, just had to press the intercom off button

Lakelander, No, I really have no idea where the whine is coming from. It just seems to be associated with the tachometer. The fuel injector makes more sense. Sure does make a loud whine though. Thanks for the information, Gasseous

Mine has had that noise since new, I went to the dealer and had them listen and was told it is normal even though some of them do not do it but most 1800s I have heard do. I changed to Amsoil synthetic the last change and it seems to be a little quieter. I'm almost convinced it is coming from the alternator drive gear.

I read somwhere and I can't find where, that it's the alternator on the 06 and newer wings. You'll probably get used to it. My 05 whines all the time like a supercharger spooling up or something. It didn't take long to get used to the noise.

Wrongway, You have described my noise to the letter. I noticed that you, Davo and myself all have the Pearl White GL1800. Maybe those are the ones that make that noise? I have pretty much gotten used to it, or I turn the radio up. I was just curious if this were something that I needed to concern myself about. Doesn't seem that it is. Thanks, Gasseous

Higher output alternator starting in 06. about 120 amps, and it is "whiney" I wear earplugs anyway, so it's not an issue with me.

My first 02 did it and then my second one was very quiet. I heard it was the timing chains/gears..

The sound of power. I love it. Twist the throttle and it will show you some power too.

Here's another thing that leads to the noise being in the alternator that I didn't mention in my other post. last weekend I was going riding and using my cell phone for an MP3 player at the same time I plugged in the charger for the phone and got the same whining in the speakers that I'm hearing from the engine. That sound make me think of a supercharger too so I just grin and pretend it is while I'm blowing the paint off some harley.

New bike same noise. At around 1800 RPM it is the loudest. I can't get used to it , I hate that noise. With all the technology in this bike it shouldn't sound like a jet engine. Sorry for rant Tom

Well if you wanted to hear noise you should have rode the Harley Springer I just sold. To me the wing is silent. Like a stealth bomber. It runs so quiet it took me awhile to get used to it. Anyways the 1800 has totally corrupted me. I really do like this bike. Al bikes have whines and characteristic noises. It us just with the silent running of a wing you can hear them better. Even a Harley with good quiet pipes you can hear the workings of the engine and transmission........ Now on mine.......you could not hear anything.......my wife would be at the garage door throwing shoes at me at 5 in the morning when I would fire that one up to warm it up, it did make the shingles on the roof dance.

Kit, I never thought that the reason I can hear this noise is because in general the GoldWing is so quiet. I had an old GL1100 Interstate and while I thought it was quiet, it was very loud in comparison. I do agree with Thessler though. It would be nice if there were some way to cover this up. I just turn the radio on. Gasseous

The 1800 engine is a bunch noisier than the 1500 engine, for sure. I kinda like it. It's especially noisy when stone cold, but settles down after a cppl. mins. I just wear those same ear plugs, and it's bliss. Just twist and gooooooooo.........................!!

Alright, I guess that this is normal and there is nothing to worry about than. But what makes that noise? Gasseous

gasseous wrote: Alright,Ok I will be serious. I do not know for sure , but I do think it is the gearing in the transmission. Then as the bike accelerates you get a bit of noise from the cam chains and yes the alternator does whine a bit in second and third gears, maybe even the air into the engine is part of it. It is like the old mustang I used to have. The sound of power. The gear box in it sounded like a jet boost also. With slicks on the rear it would snap a universal in a heartbeat. I actually love the sound of the 1800, think it is pretty neat. Kit

If you're married, the loud whine may be coming from the rear. I hear an occasional loud whining coming from the passenger side of my truck, goes away when my wife gets out (good thing for me none of you know my wife, or I'd be in trouble for this) Last edited on Fri Sep 19th, 2008 02:16 am by Tookie ____________________ Tookie - $1200.00 SE-i found in a barn (actually a Quonset building) needs a few repairs now.... 2002 GL1800, so I have something to ride until I get the SE-i going! |

My 1800 does it too. I noticed a 2003 bike was stone quiet idling next to me at the Honda shop the other day. It's not objectionable but it is there and noticable.
