I had a problem with a Dunlop D404 140/90-16 rubbing on the brake arm after about 100 miles. I ended up getting a Metzler ME880 but got the 130/90-16 to eliminat the chances of rubbing per the local shop. I also saw the tire has a rating of over 800 pounds. I have not got the bike backtogether yet but should be on it this weekend. Will 10mm less thread width even be noticable?

I have about 200 miles on the Metzler 130-90-16 now and some of that two-up riding with no problems and still plenty of clearance. I can't tell a difference in handling from the 140-90-16 D404 I had put on it originally. We are planning a day trip to the Patton Museum in Fort Knox, KY on the 24th. That will be a 300 mile round trip two-up. So far so good.

The tire performed fine on the trip. The weather was hot, we missed a turn in KY and ended up gong a little out of the way for a 350 mile round trip. I did not notice any ill affects of the narrower tire. Drove and handled great. I did notice the tire was down on pressure (40 psi) before I left so I filled it up to the max (50 psi). I did not check it with my gauge when it was first installed so I do not know where it was to start with. I have heard the Metzlers need a higher pressure and loose a little over time. I will check it again this weekend to see where it is at.

Hi! Glad you had a nice trip and made it safe! Thanks for letting me know about the tire. I think you've convinced me to go with the 130 tire over the 140 tire.... Too bad, my 140 tire has a ton of life left on it! It look almost new! Thanks for getting back to me! Graeme Attachment: Whole Side.JPG (Downloaded 65 times)

Just got on this forum, Saw something very interesting. The tire rubbing issue from the first post of this thread, I know it wasn't a recient post. BUT I bought my 82 Aspy in 1999, Right after I got it I noticed a rubbing issue that started when my wife and I got on the bike on our 1st trip. We were both on it and I am a pretty heavy guy. We had the bike loaded heavy. Tire was rubbing. Went to a different little bit narrower tire, When I loaded it down was rubbing again. Really worked on me trying to figure out why. Finally by taking a mirror and flashlight looked up at the top inside of fender. There was a fender brace that was put on backwards. Had a lip not on side of fender but towards middle 1/3 of finder. When it was loaded it would rub. It wasn't easy but took a chisel and hammer and cut it out. Took the saddle bag off to do it. As I said wasn't easy. Was suppose to leave on trip next evening so it was a most of the nighter. 10 years later not a rub, And at times it had been really loaded. Hope this will help someone.

Hey Stephen. Thanks for the feedback. Unfortunately, my tire is getting rubbed by the drive-shaft housing at the thickest width of the tire. There was a guy here as well that was having the similar problem with his Wing's 140 tire. He went down to a 130 tire, and that seemed to solve his problem, so I'll have to do the same. Hope all is well! Thanks for writing! Graeme

Hey gents, would someone be kind enough to explain the difference between a radial and a bias tire for the dingbat? RED

Hey Chauncey, Finally got around to putting a 130/90-16 on my Wing (remember, the 140 was rubbing on the swingarm) and it rides great!!!! Plenty of clearance, bike is actually a bit more nimble... Thanks for the tips way back on the switch! Hope all is well!! Graeme

Your search Fu is weak padawan, I figure if he's still been waiting since August he deserves an answer by now. ;p http://www.timberwoof.com/motorcycle/faq/maintaining.html "What’s the difference between radial tires and bias-ply tires?" The main difference between radials and bias-ply tires lies in their construction. Tires aren’t just toroidal balloons, they are reinforced with cords of steel or synthetic materials such as nylon or Aramid. In bias-ply tires, the fibers are wrapped in an X pattern between the beads; in radial tires, the fibers are wrapped perpendicular to the tread. Radial tires have more flexible sidewalls than bias-ply tires, and thus absorb road irregularities better and have a comparatively larger contact patch when leaned over. Because of the flexible nature of a radial, these offer higher mileage compared with a comparable bias-ply for a given rubber compound. Since they absorb small road irregularities better, they ride more comfortably and are less likely to be upset by groovy pavement. While radial tires perform better than bias tires, some older motorcycles can’t be fitted with radial tires because of differences in rim profiles. You probably won’t notice much of a difference anyway, so stick with boas tires if that’s what the motorcycle was designed for.

update on the Metzler 130/90-16 rear tire on my '83 Aspy. Still riding good but it is noisy. I have to replace the front tire now and I am going to put a different back tire on a the same time. Good tread left on it but it roars like a 4x4 mud tire.
