Need help.

1200 hasn't run for years. Cleaned the carbs, changed spark plugs, used diesel oil and antifreeze and I changed the timing belts too.

Here's my problem, after changing the belts, I can hear the valves on the rightside louder than I can the left.  There was some slack on the center bolt when I turned the motor to the 'T' mark.  I mean to say that I turned the center bolt and moved the mark next to the 'T' (about 1/4 inch) while the marks on the cam pulleys stayed put.

Did I cause the valve noise by not doing this right?  I did turn the motor about 10 times by hand and it moved real easy (except for the slight compression).  And every 2nd or 3rd turn as I came back to the cam marks, I checked the 'T' and it was real close, and turning the center bolt the 1/4 inch got it to the mark, while the cam pulley marks stayed put.

It's also smoking, not sure if this is from sitting or from being out of time?  It does run real real good, but so noisy that I shut it down before I damaged it.

Also, I see in the book that it calls for 3.4 qts, I used a gallon oil(4 qts).  Could this cause the valve noise?

Anybody got any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

It is possible the valves are sticking in the guides.
IIRC the 1200s have hydraulic lifters. Maybe a good dose of seafoam in the oil might free them up.

Hi Picture,

The adjusters are probably dry. If so, they will need to be removed and filled with oil. Any GL repair manual will show the procedure.

The extra oil may be contributing to the smoke. Hopfully that will quit after a few miles of running. All Wings smoke occasionally upon start-up.

Yours may take some time to get used to it's resurrection, but GL12s love to run and you're gonna love runnin' it.:action:

not sure but i've been warned over servicing oil will cause noisy lifters, easy enough to try just release oil to correct level or tiny bit lower and run:action::waving:

If I'm changing my oil before a trip, I just pour 4 quarts in, as I know constant high-speed running will use a bit more than normal. It has never made the bike sound different.

I'm pretty sure your problem is a collapsed lifter. When they sit for a long time, the oil runs out. You can try running the bike for awhile and see if the offendig lifters will pump up on their own, or you can pop them out and fill them yourself.

I've never done the job, but if you've removed, re-built and replaced the carbs I think you can handle anything that bike throws at you.

Picturethis---In addition to what I said in the PM--these guys have given you good info. I did not see that the bike had been laid up for an extended period. The lash adjusters are almost certainly dry and full of air. Get the oil quantity correct and just let it run for a few moments and eventually, and hopefully, the noise will go away. If NO after a couple minutes, then you will need to pull the covers and bleed/fill the lifters with engine oil.
