Hi All , i bought my first goldwing 2 months ago and have been fighting a knock that comes in at 3000 rpm when warm. i have done sea foam, decarbon, carb sync, tune up. lots of stuff i read off this great site. anyway i found that my vacuum advance that is fed off carb. #3 had a leak in the diaphram. i thought maybe this leak might be leaning out #3 or engine was getting to much advance. anyway i disconnected it and 90% of my noises and clangs are gone what a different bike. i connected it back up because i could not believe it and all the noise came back. i think these bikes have to much advance for todays fuel. does anyone make recurved advances for these? i would love to here your feedback and try this if all else has failed. I too have been battling the same knock. 20,00 miles later and it's still the same, though on the good side, it's no worse. I am going to try your remedy tomorrow.

You can make the vacuum advance adjustable. There is a plastic plug in the end of the vacuum pot. With an 1/8" or 3mm drill bit drill out the plug and there are threads in the pot. You will need to remove the cover from the back of the advance assembly to find a starting point for the adjustment. Put an approx. 1' or 25mm long 5mm screw in the hole, hold the advance all the way clockwise and run the screw in until it starts to move the advance. You would need the clear timing hole cover and a timing light to do it properly but you could ride, stop and adjust to get it set to suit you. It doesn't take much adjustment to make a difference, about 1/4 turn increments should do it then put some sealer on the screw to keep it from moving and seal the vacuum.
