ok here we go again. i'm starting this project off with a great runing 86 1200 aspy. on board air everything seems to work great and have ridden this a few miles to make sure it runs and preforms as it should before i trike it. i also added my version of the poor boy alternator setup on the bike and test rode the bike a few miles before the tare down.

heres the bike after  alt conversion before the tare down

started by placing the bike on the center stand and stripping the rear off that i'm not going to use. instead of making my swing arm from scratch this time i am going to attemp to use the goldwing swing arm and mod it. this may or may not work. i'm hoping it will save me some time on welding and fabing.

i cut the drive shaft side tube at the brace that ties the swingarm rails togeather in the middle on maybe a 45 degree angle, close. i did this at what to me looked like the strongest point which is going to be where i will attach the extension of the swingarm to the rear end. i off set the rearend this time so that the driveshaft will run in the same place it did originally.

the first thing you need to do is to get the wheel and tire setup you are going to use so you will be able to see how much you will need to remove from your rear end of choice.

in this case mine rear end of choice is a 1998 mustang.   it came equipted with a posi 3.08 gear and disk brakes, the disk brakes are a must. the gear is a little low for the stock 2.88 or 2.83 i can't remember now but i compensated with a taller tire from 24" to 26" should be just right.

once you've come up with your tire wheel combination you can start the measuring process. most of the factory trikes seem to have a wheel base of around 60+ in". getting the look is important but making sure it's wide enough that it want tip up on you is important too.

my combination came in at 53" looks good and not too narrow for me anyway. which caused me to take 6" from the left axle and 14" from the right axle. what you remove from the axles you'll need to remove from the tubes. your tire combination will dictate what you remove from the axles. get it right. if it's too short your done for.  take a sawsall and have at it.

so my   axles shipped out to :

moser engineering

102 performance drive

portland indiana

206-726-4159 these guys are great and the axle cut and re-spline is 110 + shipping. should have them in here by thursday.

of course if you do screw it up anyway after all the measureing you can always compensate with a different wheel offset.

i went ahead and tacked the end of the tubes back on and just a tack while waiting on the axles. you will need to measure when welding these back on to make sure your straight. don't want to be wearing out bearing prematurely.

now if your affraid to cut your own tubes you don't need to be doing this. if you have a buddy or moser will chop um for you but that gets expensive. this part is really pretty easy just get it straight.

find a place on the rearend and measure in about 6 places and get it the same on the hub all the way around tacking it as you go. a straight cut will really help in linning it back up.

i also realined the caliper bracket just purely cause I liked it on the angle instead of where it was.   you can put it front ,up, down . it was in the back position stock.

also you need to make sure the rear-end is where you want it in reference to your swing-arm. that's another reason not to weld anything solid until you have your axles in and tires on the ground so you can get the right angle on your swing arm and drive shaft.

I'm going to give all the measurements and angles and all that but if you use a different wheel offset yours will be some different.

i may have to do somethings 2 or 3 times as this is not exactly like i made the other one. so we build it together.

this being a posi again, wheres a limited slip when you need one, i removed the center spring on the clutch pack to loosen it up some , that worked pretty good on the last one and didn't cause me or the new owner a problem, yet.

ideally you would want to get a limited slip no clutch pac in the rear end.

thank you! i think:shock:

this is the 2 pieces before the tack. again just tack at this point you can put your wheels up against the end of this set up and measure 3" from the end of the tube to the inside of the wheel and get a close idea if you measured right.

at this point you can make adjustments to your axle length if you need to. it's easier to re-cut the tubes then the axles. but if you figured right the first time.

you can see in the pic I cut the end of the tube at the apex of the curve of the tube. so it's right at being to small and just right to fit it and weld it back to the main tube. makes it easy to keep it straight.

a trick to getting it straight for me is to measure from where the tube slips into the center chunk all the way around and then run some tape around it where you want to cut and then saw.

You got a good jump on her. Looking good. What gear ratio did you use? Or did you already say and I missed it.

I found it, nice project you got going.

3.08 but i went with taller tires and i did already post it. maybe a slight setback on the build dislocated to finger on my right hand sat. and they are still pretty bruised and swollen but as long as i don't hit them on anything they'll work some. had to be on my right hand and i just happen to be right handed:shock:

just a safety note here while doing any grinding or welding around your bike remove the battery and store it in a safe place. my brand new battery just exploded in my face even though i was a good 5 ft away from it. was a rush trying to figure out what happened until i saw the fluid leaking from the bike. first one on a motorcycle i have ever had to do that and i have welded on and around them for a long time. side cover was removed and i guess a spark found some hydrogen and boom. jfyi becareful when doing any welding or grinding even close to your bikes. unless of course you have the sealed battery. but if it has acid in it watch out.

Yes, that is always the proper thing to do.

We think the battery is "just a small one", but explosions can be very nasty regardless of how big/small the battery is.

I've only seen one do that, in a '69 Chevy pickup. It went through the truck's hood and "way up there" somewhere.

Fortunately, everyone was over at the other truck when it happened.

All of us grabbed a water hose just for safety's sake.

im still curious on the right side with the drive shaft .  This one seems quite a bit differant than the other one you pivoted off the centerstand frame section. Ill wait and see what you come up with.  Thanks JB

got the rearend setting on the ground with the tires on it now and leveled it all up postioned the rearend where i wanted it.

i measured from the passenger ft rest to the center of the tubes. 23 1/2" in this case and lowered the bike until i had the right angle on the rear end. scotched everything in place and started to fabed the left swing arm extension. well almost all of it.

i used a piece of 1 1/4 X 1 1/4 X 3/16 square tubing i picked up at a local steel shop for the swing arm extension. i can give you the lengths i cut for mine {12" longside 3" for the short piece} but if you set your rear end closer than mine or futher away yours will be different.

i figured just showing you how i do mine will work and you can cut your own to fit.

i welded some flat plate to the swing arm addition so the welding would be easier and for added strength and welded that to the old swingarm.

then cut a piece to reach the axle tubes.

these two areas will be gusited top and bottom later when i remove the swingarm for the final welds.

i use 2 pieces of 1 1/4 angle to make the swingarm bracket for the rearend. in case of a needed repair or you have to remove the rearend for any reason pulling 2 1/2" bolts the rear can be removed. i used a 1/4 by 2" piece of flat plate steel to weld to the bracket and then that to the rearend. used 2 pieces of the angle welded togeather to hold the new swingarm and drilled a whole through them while the swingarm was inserted into the bracket.
