I went to start the Goldwing yesterday and it kicked off at first then stopped (too little throttle while cold), hit the switch again and the light dimmed, but the starter wont' roll over.

the starter is new, the switch works (lights dim), no clicking from the solenoid.

I suspect it has to be between the button and the relay. Does anyone have a wiring diagram so I can see what runs where so I know what to meter? Or any other ideas of what it could be.

Thanks.

here you go but all are in the reference section for download fron MC's site including manuals. Alos check your battery's output under load if below 10.5 it's too low, also ground connections, the one at the motor mount especially, and the posts on the solenoid.

Ditto with the above...mine did the same thing & it was crappy connections on the two solenoid posts. Betcha it's a simple problem!

gotta love a goldwing that's almost 30yr old that will fire right up on the fist attempt push starting it. oh it's 32F outside :)

I've got a fuel injected 04 ZX-10R that doesn't want to start that cold, and my 30yo honda can be push started stone cold.

Check your solenoid connectors. Mine fried due to dirt and corrosion. Im lucky A buddy had a parts 1100 I snipped and soldered a new connector.Of course only after cleaning and di electric greasing it.

I had teh same problem but I would keep trying to hit the button hoping she would start, but that just added to the heat at the connector.

Had same problem on mine also check clutch switch i have seen at least 4 that have failed. simple test is to unplug the two wires going to the switch at the clutch handle and place a small jumper between them if bike cranks over and starts problem sloved.

It stops the starter from turning when the bikes in gear and the clutch is not pulled in.

Found it. I was tracing and metering everything I could find. I found this beauty buried under a nice ball of electrical tape.

http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q233/Giant81/iPhone%20uploaded/54b00950.jpg

That's the connection to the starter relay. I'm going to go ahead and see if I can find a replacement, if not, I'll get it cleaned up, and re-soldier it up. Since there isn't much room, I'm thinking I'll have to splice in about 3" to give me a little bit of breathing room.

Thanks to the forum for the help. I wouldn't have found it had RB not pointed me to the reference section.

Looks like someone has attempted a repair and the fix was worse than the original problem.
That was good methodical diagnosing.:clapper:

You need to do some diagnosing like Giant81 did, don't just throw parts at it. There is a wiring diagram in an above post. Check for power to the yellow/red wire when you push the button. Check for ground on the green/red wire when in neutral and/or with the clutch pulled.

alrighty then. Got the starter relay connector fixed.

Start

Middle

END

Quick test and she turns over great. It's 40 degrees F here, I hit the button with no choke to just see if she rolls over and she fires right up. Doesn't stay running, but she fired up stone cold with no choke :) luv ma baby!!

I noticed something leaking when it was sitting so I threw a pan under it. This is what I accumulated in about 3 days of sitting. Should I be concerned? I wouldn't worry about oil, but coolant worries me ALOT. Though it could be something as easy as a loose hose. i'll go through the system this weekend and see what I can find.

thanks for checking in and I'll keep you posted on how other stuff goes.

Well lots of the Gl's leak in cold weather when it warms up the leaks stop, I'd wait and see...but it is either your large o ring is going south/brittle or the mechanical seal is worn which means a new pump for most..can be rebuilt but not for the faint of heart.

Well I guess that's the end of that.

Here are the results of my trip around the block.

It started as a relay connection not working, fixed that and found the coolant leak. Went for a ride and found my starter wouldn't engage. finally got it bump started and got it down the block. the front brakes felt sticky so I went to go around the block and come back and didn't even make the corner. The Front locked up and the bike went down. I'm unhurt but it looks like the wing is down for the count. :(

I don't know that I have the money, itme, nor motivation to dive into it at the moment. If I believed a bit more in a higher power, I'd take this as a pretty blatant sign I'm not to be riding this year.

Thanks to those that helped so far, and someday I may have another bike, but for now I'm stuck in my cage.

Me too! When I came out of the house I thought I'd either go left and head down the highway or go right and take a ride around town. Looks like the town option was the better idea. Had I been on the high way when the brake seized up, I'd be road pizza.

definitely a start, but I'm afraid of what else I'll need when I get into it. as you can see the timing cover and seal is banged up, I wonder if possibly the right camshaft got knocked, if that's the case, I could need a new head, piston, etc.. :( I'm just discouraged right now. Hell, I can't even get it back to my house. With the front wheel locked and I have no trailer, so there it sits on the side of the road.
