I did that on my 79 GL and it has worked good for about a year now.

Why in the world would you change to anything that is not recommended by the manufacturer?
DOT 5 neither accepts nor dispenses moisture, making systems using it more prone to corrosion and requiring much more frequent changes. Silicone brake fluid lacks glycol fluid's natural occuring lubricity, making it incompatible with the mechanical valving in some ABS systems.

The main point is the high maintainance requirements of silicon based fluid, which may be acceptable in a racing atmosphere but, not acceptable for normal street use.

Silicone fluid does have benefits but they don't really apply to touring bikes. I thought about it for my bikes but decided it was too much bother for no real benefit. Instead I just replace the fluid every couple of years with DOT 4.

I was changing my fluids this past week and I went to my local Canadian Tire outlet and I couldnt find DOT 4 there, they had DOT 3 and a shelf full of DOT 4 synthetic fluid.
It seems they dont stock regular none synthetic fluid now.
I hunted some up in a NAPA store.

I did the same thing and walked out empty handed. The word "synthetic" on the bottle through me. What is synthetic brake fluid? It was a Prestone brand too. No regular Canadian Tire stuff in Dot 4.

The DOT 5(silicone) won't 'mix' with the non silicone brake fluids(DOT 3 and 4).It requires more maintenance than the regular types(DOT 3 & 4)

"On the disadvantage side however, silicone fluid aerates easily. Harley-Davison, one of the sole current OEM users of silicone fluid, warns buyers to let the fluid sit at least an hour before using it. The trip home in the saddlebag is enough to aerate silicone brake fluid until it looks like a freshly poured soft drink. Silicone fluid is also slightly more compressible than glycol fluid, does not change color to tip the user to its moisture content, and worst of all, neither accepts or disperses moisture, making systems using it more corrosion prone, and requiring much more frequent fluid changes. Silicone brake fluid also lacks glycol fluid's naturally occuring lubricity, making it incompatible with the mechanical valving in some antilock braking systems. "

There is a newer glycol based, synthetic DOT 5.1 brake fluid out now, which is compatible with those sytems that use DOT 3, or 4
