The speedometer on my 93 1500A stopped working today during a trip.  I found that the blade that comes out of the drive and slips into the speedometer cable had broken off. The cable appears to be ok and spins fairly freely. How hard is it to replace that part?  How do I get it off or out?  Thanks Dewayne

If you are talking about the part on the front wheel, then it is not too hard to replace. You have to take the front wheel off to get to it. If you do not want to go back with a new OEM part you can find used ones on Ebay.

FWIW, I did this recently on my 1100. Not the same as your 1500 I know, but in my case the gear drive is plastic and the tabs/ears on it broke off, requiring a new (used) drive unit.

So, if the tab that the speedometer cable connects to breaks, the whole drive has to be replaced? I was kinda hoping that the plastic worm gear that goes into the drive is replaceable

It is replaceable, get it new at BikeBandit.com I'm sure there are other places as well but that is where I got mine.

http://www.bikebandit.com/houseofmotorcycles/1993-honda-motorcycle-gl1500i-gold-wing-interstate/o/m2376

scrow down to wheels and tires

If you don't have the interstate, just go back and put in what your model is:waving:

As SpiderBob suggests, Bikebandit is a good place to get one.  I found it a little cheaper at http://www.cyclepartsnation.com/pages/parts/viewbybrand/7/Honda.aspx

Select your model and then go to the front wheel.

Part #11 is the worm gear.  Part #10 is the whole gearbox.

Thanks Doug, but the part that broke is the tab that goes into the female end of the speedometer cable. It is the straight piece that appears to be about 1" long inside the gear housing. Street and trail told me that I will have to buy the whole drive.:(

Also, Doug, I went to order one from you link and started to check out and found that they want $19.95 shipping for UPS ground. That makes it the same price as Street and Trail. Was the shipping that high when you ordered? I hate to pay that much for a 6oz part.

Check http://www.hdlparts.com also to see what their shipping cost is.

Also, per our phone conversation, the torque values for the front axle and pinch bolts are:

Pinch Bolts - 16ft-lbs
Axle - 65ft-lbs

Is a good source, most times cheaper than BikeBandit I had found.

Hey guys, one more question! I got the drive hub in today. Do I apply grease to the inside before installation?
